Found the fix, if this should happen to you, it's a common problem in Vista. On a startup you can find you are missing your CD/DVD drive/s.
You have to go into the Registry and delete an entry, like so.

Click Start then Run and type regedit...click "Ok"

In the left pane, expand (click +) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, and click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} In the right pane, are UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters listed?

highlight LowerFilters go to the edit tab click and click DELETE click ok to the message. Restart and the drives should be back...
Lyn. OH! this is the same fix as was used back in the first days of XP.
