Whats REMANUFACTURED all about then?

As a result of the thread on a digital camera I found a Nikon CoolPix 4300 for $214.95. However is bears the label:


This item has been REMANUFACTURED. It is in NEW condition and carries a manufacturer’s warranty.
All original supplied accessories included.

I've noticed this on a few things including iPAQs, what does it really mean? I can't believe they really have been sold, or taken part and rebuilt :confused: Is it just a way of shifting excess stock at a lower price without 'diluting' the market value?
Am I wrong in thinking its a bargain?

Most Re-Man stuff is 100%. The kit is normally packaging damaged in transit, returned goods, cancelled orders or DOA. All this stuff is normally returned to the manufacturer or distributor and reworked with new packaging & bits & pieces. Sometimes top name kit will come in brown boxes. They're not allowed to sell it as new so bang it out from outlet stores at a discount.

I've bought plenty of bits from the Sony & Bose outlets in the US and Dell in the UK. It's all been warranted the same as new kit but been much cheaper :D I've just received (today) a spankers new Canon digital video camera from the Canon outlet. It's got all the bits it should have and a pile of firewire stuff. The camera is brand new and unused and cost me £200GBP - a LOT less than buying the same thing the traditional way

IMHO If you're being offered full warranty (EU) and there's a saving - you can't go far wrong.

One caveat with some outlets is they say "No Returns" - I'm not sure how that stands up over here.

Ding. I worked for the electronics division of Xerox. I ran the remanufacturing section at Mitcheldean. We received non working circuit boards from the production lines and field service. They were repaired, tested and shipped for re-assembly into remanufactured printers & copiers.

HTH You are covered by the sale of goods act just like any other product. Everything must be "fit for its purpose" so if it does not function properly you are entitled to a refund. What you may not get is a full guarantee which is effectively a service contract between buyer and manufacturer.

I used to work for HP and their "Remanufactured" kit was generally ex-demo or ex-rental kit that came back and was refurbished and sold with guarantees as if new. I think the label is only there to differentiate from brand new products but otherwise the price should be less and the quality the same.

Whats the address for the Cannon outlet then?, I could do with one of these, it's cheaper than buying in the US and risking brining in to the UK via custom's, which was going to be my first option

Go to ebay.co.uk and search for Canon Outlet. They've got piles of stuff on there that you can bid for or "Buy Now".

I did a "Buy Now" on a 530i which was less than one's being bid for. I bought on Friday and it was delivered today. It was supplied with Firewire card, cable and editing software. Didn't make any sense to me why people were bidding more than they needed to but I suppose that's ebay for ya!

Take your time to go through all of their listings as the prices vary for the same thing. Also, you'll usually get second chance if you lose a bid as they have so much stock. Payment is via their own secure site.
