Whilst riding home in traffic today my bike made a small fart and stopped dead, I was only doing about 10MPH and the engine was just about idling it started after a few turns over and then the red warning light came on momentarily and then went off. It rode normall for he next 5 miles.

Was it just having a moment or should I check further?

Is it a GSA 2010 by any chance?

Whether this is in anyway connected I don't know but there have been a number of threads concerning stalling engines over the last few years. I have had this myself on a few occasions but it's always been impossible to replicate whilst at a dealers. The only things in my case which have been consistent are:

1. Most times when the engine has just stalled has been when slowing down quite fast and after downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I have also on a few rarer occasions had the engine just die when blipping the throttle whilst just moving off - as the revs drop, they keep dropping, the motor hiccups and stops.

2. I have had this happen on stock headers/stock exhaust, stock headers/Akra can, Remus headers/stock can and Remus headers/Akra can. Same with and without the accelerator module.

3. In all cases the engine would not restart when in gear even with the clutch dis-engaged. I have to put the bike into neutral before the engine will start. This seems to be mimicking what happens first thing if the ignition is switched on with the bike in gear - even with the clutch pulled in the bike won't start until it's been put into neutral. So, when the engine stalls, the electronics seem to be resetting the ignition somehow. If I deliberately stall the bike when in gear, the clutch switch works as expected so I know that works OK.

4. If I take a more conservative route when coming to a stop (by not blipping the throttle on fast downshifts) and changing down when at idle revs I don't get this problem.

There could be loads of reasons for this but the thing I don't understand is why the ignition resets itself and won't allow me to restart the engine whilst in gear and the clutch disengaged. That's the biggest pain for me.

This has happened to me as well but only twice. I hadn't made the connection with the clutch but yes same here, I just instinctively put it in neutral when the starter wouldn't spin and didn't think any more about it. Sounds more like a software glitch than mechanical, something like the ECU reboots and because revs are low and in gear the engine cuts. When its all back up the ECU assumes this is a first start so needs neutral. ECU reboot isnt uncommon by the way its just normally it happens so fast you never notice. One time nearly had me off as it was a T junction and it stopped when I was cranked over a bit.
Not sure if this has anything to do with the OP's question though. If you got a red light then there will be a fault code for sure which will tell you something about what was happening at the time.

Yep 2010 GSA. Is it more common on these?

Get your dealer to check the valve timing for the left cylinder but more importantly get the software reflashed on the BMS -KP (engine ecu) this sorts it out

I had a similar problem a few times with a Triumph Tiger in a previous life......spoke to the dealer who asked if I allowed the ECU to run its checks fully before pressing start button (about 5secs from turning ignition on). I hadn't realised the need to wait but did what I was told .....and never experienced the problem again. Dealer said not waiting for ECU checks could sometimes upset fuelling settings, causing stalls. Could it be the same with the GS?

I had this a couple of times on my 2005 1200 RT and then several times on my 2008 1200 GSA. Broadly agree with Beemerman's symptoms though I have sometimes been able to restart it without recycling the ignition.

Seems to go through phases - fine for months and then several times in a few hundred miles. Odd.

No error codes recorded though NOG once thought it might be due to a battery with a low charge. Last time it had been doing it, I got NOG to have a look; they didn't find anything but it did stop doing it so it may just be a fine adjustment somewhere. Don't think it is the ECU checks as I always let them run to completion. Skywalker's suggestions look interesting.
