if you had lots of big noises at the same time, could be the infamous RH cylinder valve seperation.

Hopefully not though!

Of course, you have been checking your 'can bus' fluid every trip as reccomended in your manual?

Mart64

actually for once did give the bike a good check over before my trip yesterday as it was the first relatively long trip since november

I'm a bit out of touch as I no longer ride a 1200 but I always found BMW badged stuff to be the best, however there are many more experienced riders on here that produce their own fluids for 1200's can bus system:mmmm

If you're the orginal owner and it has a full BMW service history there is a chance but you need to ask your dealer to request goodwill from BMW on your behalf :thumb2

Well I would be asking if it was a trained mechanic that actually serviced it 300miles ago or the apprentice?
could be that someone hasn't done a propper job 300 miles ago an something has worked loose maybe?
worth a try?

found a second hand engine with 8k on the clock for 1500 plus the fitting cost or go for a full rebuild with no guarentee that BMW will make a goodwill contribution

decision time

any views?

So £1500 for secondhand unit, any guarantee with that, plus another £2-300 for fitting and no idea of the state of the engine against the dealer rebuild? Any idea of the rebuild cost yet? As someone else said is there any service history with the dealer? Is the dealer hopeful for a goodwill contribution? Or perhaps get a second quote from a respected mechanic on here such as Steptoe, i've heard his work is first class and keenly priced.

there is a guarentee with the second hand engine

However dealer is now a bit more confident on a goodwill gesture so looks like i go with the dealer rebuild

i just want my wheels back!!

On a previous GS I have a valve drop within 50 miles of the service - convinced they misadjusted the valve clearences - and that was a BMW dealer. I made the mistake of getting it trasported back to them :blast and they denied their service was to blame.

Which dealer, or if you prefer not to say, which part of the land do you live in, we might guess from that.

I'd call BMW and give them fuk, I won't help the bike but will make you feel better

I live near guildford. It was a while ago to be fair but I haven't been back. A bit of a coincidence 40k trouble free miles and then a dropped valve within 50 miles of the service - and a 400 quid bill to repair. In this case the service could have been a factor IMO.
