Ive recently traded up to my first GS! A 2002 1150 - what a bike!

Im utterly bewildered by the Service & Technical Handbook that came with it and was wondering if anyone here can straighten me out on how it works.

There appears to be three types of Service(im at work, without it to hand and going from memory here so forgive me if im a bit fuzzy on some of the intervals)

Type 1 : 'The BMW Service' -600 miles then every 12,000mls or 20,000kms.

Type 2 : 'The BMW Inspection' - 1st one at 6000mls or 10,000kms then every 12,000mls or 20,000kms therafter (slotting in between the type 1 services.

Type 3 : 'The Annual service' - entirely time based once every 12 months irrecspective of milage (or so I assume as there is no record of milage indicated)

As part of my purchase aggreement the dealer did an annual service as the bike hadn't been serviced for a year and currently sits at around the 14.5k mile mark.

What im confused about is that if I get to 30,000kms or 18,000mls within the next twelve months (highly likely as I the bike is a extremely comfortable) , I will be due for 'a BMW Inspection'.... but potentially due shortly after for 'The Annual Service'.

I suppose what i'm getting at here is that in order to maintain the warrenty( I got a two year deal ) will I be getting stung for at least two of these services every 12 months?
At anything from £2-300 a pop - this could be a very pricey bike to run :(

Help!,

Put it another way - Minor service , 6K miles
Major service , 12K miles
So you have alternate services,
Annual service if you don't do enough miles

don't forget the fuel filter at 24K miles ( or less if run in countries with poor fuel )
And the alternator belt change at 36K miles ( may need changing before that).

Thanks for that Steptoe , think I get it. I guess if your within a couple of hundred miles of one of these intervals then the'll do the service and stamp the appropriate bit otherwise it's an annual service.
Care to take a stab at how close you have to be?
The guess the worst sitauation would be if a year had passed and you were about 1000miles short of an interval then you get to pay twice in a very short space of time!

thanks again,

Don't worry too much about the intervals.....I had my 6k with 8500 on the clock in May, then the 12k in August with 13k on the clock.

I had the 18k done last week with 17300 on the clock.....I needed some warrenty work doing so rather than take it in twice in a few weeks, got it all done at the same time.

As long as you keep the oil level spot on, they don't mind in my experience.

Oh and there's a full and pretty detailed list of all the items they do on each service on the BWM website...I'll dig out the URL in a bit if no-one does it first.
