Today, after 30,000mls, on two 1200's, after a couple of times on its side  , bashed against fences and gates on a daily basis, stuffed to the gills with so much stuff, the effort required to shut it requires jamming my knees under the lid to help closing, the inevitable has happened, got to work this morning and the locking mechanism has failed on one side, not broken, just unlatched, the pannier has remained secure, helped by the handle acting as a secondary catch.

Now, If they are not replaced under warrantee, i was thinking of getting a set of ally panniers either Civil's, mm's or jessies, has anybody done the hard work and decided which is best between the 3 makes? do they all fit flush (ie leaving a flat platform when the rear seat is removed? what the difference between the curved top civil's and the flad lids, is it just capacity or are there other reasons :nenau

For me at the moment the Civil ones are winning, but i've been wrong before

...bmw will refund top boxes / plates due to the well known design fault that they don't tell you about when you buy them (they come off all by themselves)

There's tons on UKGSER and ADVRider about it.

...don't know about refunds for side pannier boxes

Well if the bike's been on its side, one of the side panniers becomes a topbox :D
