Can someone please tell me how MCN managed to get only 31mpg as an average mpg with a fuel range of 220 miles from the new ADV. I thought the stanard GS had a fuel range close to that? In 20'000 miles on my 1200RT (Will have an ADV this Saturday) I have never seen it drop below 48 mpg.

Becasue they're a bunch of muppets. They were probably trying to set a new lap record around Brands Hatch or something - after all, if a bike doesn't do fast lap times it's no good as far as they're concerned, is it?

I gave up buying MCN earlier this year - waste of money and paper.

And they don't seem to understand that you can choose between two different type of tyres. They tested the bike with offroad tyres, doing and on-road-only test!

I've just passed 500 km without filling up the tank, I guess that's close to 300 miles. And there's more fuel left.....

Enjoy Life!

Two Wheels Only also have a full review of the 2006 BMW lineup including the Adv, they seem to like the new 800 too...

Maybe I've not been reading between the lines. :nenau

Last week they had a 1150GS Adv vs 1200GS Adv, sidebar where they made all the same old points ... crap on off-road tyres and crap consumption ... f**k knows what they are doing ...

Only running mine in but put in some good riding around Wales and chased a few sportbikes around and still getting 52mpg according to on board computer!

As Eddie Izzard once said, its down to reseach, he, like them, favours passive research, they let the information come to them probably & whilst down the pub doing the only thing they're really good at getting pi$$ed on the barmaids apron.

488 miles so far, put 28 litres in on 1st fill up with 322 miles on the clock with panniers fitted, 52.27 mpg. So not only am I being accussed of hanging around in a questionable place that shirt lifters frequent  , I`m now a school girl :( . I think its best we don`t take this any further :nono

I like to think I obtain this mpg due to my advanced riding skills and superior observation :P :D When I had my 04 1200 with its lean fuelling setup, I regulary got 60+ mpg, but I don`t think this will be possible with the richer setup on the new bikes and heavier weight of the GSA.

My bet's an Anakee; I burned through my set of those quickly, too. Tourances have more lozenge-shaped treads.

Any other takers? :D

BMW spending plenty of money in MCN..... Lots of ads:

MCN gave BMW more (positive) coverage than any other manufacturer in run up to the Ally Pally show; more recent front covers than any other brand....

MCN readers aren't BMW owners - BMW are looking to become mainstream and reach a new audience and are using MCN to do it. Whether WE like/read MCN is irrelevant; it influences more bikers than any other medium.

Years ago Triumph wouldn't have got off the ground without MCN, and although it has changed since then it's still top of the pile amongst those who think BMWs are ridden by strange old blokes.

Re. ADV fuel consumption - if you're riding a GSX or Blade, would 31mpg sound bad?

Too right - they need to be educated that now BM's are increasingly owned and ridden by strange young blokes....

Yeah, its an Anakee ... but ...

I rode two different 1200 ADV on Tourance's and both of them had a shimmy in the steering ... one much more pronounced than the other but nonetheless it was still there.

In fact the second one (SPC demo) was bad enough that I resigned myself to possibly ditching the supplied Tourance's if thats what it turned up on ... as it happens, my ADV was supplied on Anakees and I'm quite impressed, lots of grip, solid feeling on the road even in the streaming wet (they are fresh tho). If the mileage does turn out to be 3500 vs. 8000 then I might have to re-consider but my experience so far is that the ADV doesn't feel as good on Tourance.

BTW, any other new ADV riders notice that buffetting when travelling behind a high-top Transit type van is bloody awful, I don't remember the GS being this bad, or is it just me? Artics and 7.5 tonne is no worse than normal, even Luton bodies, but I'm starting to think I've got it in for Tranny drivers!

Could that have somthing to do with the fact that you live in the states and your gallons are smaller than ours ?

Also I said RT.

For some reason Transits have a huge bow wave.. not noticeable in an artic but anything up to 18 tonnes gets a sideways shove from them when they pass by... feck knows why as they don't seem to be that much of a different shape to other vans of that ilk..

I guess you didn't look close enough to see whether there were any balance weights on the rims? That behaviour sounds exactly like my '06 1200 (non ADV) which had out of balance wheels/tyres from the factory. Maybe this year they're saving money by not shelling out on those expensive lead weights..... :nenau

I never experienced or heard of Tourances behaving like that before.

The bike came with Anakees on.... and I so wanted to hate them :(

I love the Tourance and have never had a problem with them, but the Anakees have stuck like the proverbial, so putting another Anakee on the rear in the morning... that should last until the front's knackered

Then put Tourance on? Dunno... I like the Anakee's so may stop with them. I aint bothered if I only get 3,500 miles out of the rear... as long as it sticks like sh1t :D :D

Ive not had any problems with my tourances but then they were fitted here as my bike arrived with TKC 80 by mistake

so far i do like them and have got to the edge of tread and if they last all the better

I had Dunlop D607 on my last 1200 GS and i liked them

I love tourances ,feel solid as a rock can handle gravelly stuff (though its not like I go looking for it) and I still can't get over the fact that I got 12000 miles out of a pair!

do the new 140mph capable ones last so well?

middle-aged, strange, MCN buyer (can never seem to get round to reading it)

At least one of the bikes I rode w. Tourances on was dealer fitted with them, as the demo bike delivered was on TKCs originally. They switched it to Tourance for customer demo use after the open weekend, so I'd hope that they balanced the wheel ...

Either way, I'm more than happy with the Anakee package and short of some amazing alternative and enlightenment (BattleWing?) I'll probably stick with them at swap time.

BTW, my front wheel has a 10g weight mounted ... but three other ADV's I checked today had no weights front or rear ... accuracy or complacency or just superfluous ??
