As photographer on Lurchers (Mark) project Airhead thread I popped over the road this morning to take the first snaps.
He has a gem of a workshop attached to his house which I am mildly envious of.
As he gets stuff done I will add the snaps and he will talk the talk.

First photos...

The frame is in its early days and will when the welding is all done be blasted and painted.

The mountings for adjustable pegs.

New steering stops.

An extended bit that I'm sure he will explain the reasoning behind.

A set of rather nice forks.

Lurcher010.jpg

His old bike that is donating the engine.

Complete with carb conversion he did a while ago.

An over extended and chopped swing arm that apparently is a bit too long, mk2 is currently in the machine shop.

The workshop.

Next time I'll make sure I don't have the camera on the wrong setting cos a couple of the snaps I took were crap and couldn't be used :blast

will it be

a mono arm jobbie or is he going for the twin swing arm. the reason i ask is i've a jig to build a twin arm he could borrow which would give it the 100mm extension.:thumb

Thanks for the offer but I am extending a mono S/A I will cut and paste my previous posts and then carry on the story. The old workshop looks quite good in the photos!!

Thanks to trippy I can post Pics. Yep the s/a is 50mm longer, machined block between b/box and s/a. I don’t like the idea of lengthening the drive shaft by welding as it acts as a torsion spring so I have extended the the drive socket instead.
I think the Mono frame gives a better angle for the shock to work at i.e. not so laid down. The forks are too long at the mo so will be shortened by about 2". the fork internals are cartridge type and are works of art I have had two spacers made to fit under the rebound springs to shorten the forks I will loss 2" of travel so will only have 8" left. enough for my offroading skills.Paralever rear wheel machined to fit mono b/box. large cast disc brembo 4 pot. Modified subframe. The mono bevel box does away with the spline mounting system and the taper bearings in the hub, both of which can cause problems. The brake shoe actuating cam has been machined to act upside down so that the lever points upwards. I have machind a top bearing cup instead of machining a longer steering stem as I prefere a higher top yoke and therefore flatter bars Begining to panick now because the daylight hours are getting longer and loads to do.

I dream of having that much space to work.

Good thread. We like projects

I also had that dream, so I lived it and built a double lenght garage with an entrance from the house, nice and cosy and perfect for working on my bikes.

When I next visit my ex I'll take some pictures.

I'd take some pictures of my council lock up but it's a mile walk and there's no light.

I met up with Riche Moore the other day and he's got me thiking about all the good things I could do to my Airhead

Moto-Isreal bloke told me last year he had got 110 HP out of an Airhead engine he had builtup again for a spanish guy
put one of them in it !!!!!! Dont know which oil he put in it though

I recon he said it was a little pricey mind ( 20k yo-yos ) just for the engine
Very interested in your project more info as you do it please :thumb
Mr Isreal is a total proffessional outfit - top man top stuff etc

The extra bits of metal under the head stock is for fork stops for the paiolis, while I was welding stuff on I cut some gusset plates like the ones HPN use and welded them in as well which doesnt show up that well in the photo. For the s/a extension block and the extended dive shaft will be about300 notes gulp must sell some bits I have a GS fairing if any ones interested and a standard twin disc front end with Brembo brakes snow flake wheels etc.

Having just removed my gearbox I inspected my clutch and noticed it is the early 1981 exploding type. Has anyone ever had one actually fail?

Tonight

I think I am getting the hang of the photos this has been a costly exersize as I have had to smash 3 computers for harshing my melon. Still here we are The R80 frame is now braced and freshly painted. The motor has been transplanted from the doner bike. Not without incident though as it has taken hours to free the downpipes. The righthand one was so seized it had to be cut off and dremeled out. The swingingarm and its extensions will be offered up tomorrow. The reprofiled brake cam is ready to go in and hopefully tested.

Evening Lurcher :thumb2
One Q'
Is the modified brake cam being operated by arm facing upwards ??
if so shouldn't the cam ramps be clockwise, not anticlockwise operating ??
or id your pic somehow reversed ?

Hi Proff Yes you are correct the cam has been reprofiled so that it pulls with the arm upright. All you have to do is swap the brake shoes from top to bottom to allow for this.
