Travel insurance, check yours

We are going to do a 5 day off road fun rally (the Aragon HISS).

Our usual health and travel insurance will not cover us for this so can anyone recommend a company/policy?
Preferably we would like an annual policy.

Many thanks

It's already in this thread somewhere but for higher risk activities, get a quote from www.snowcard.co.uk as they cover all sorts of activities - my heliboarding friend used them for a trip to Russia

Although it's massively early to be worrying about it, we are hitting dead ends all the way while trying to find (reasonably priced) travel insurance for, non-UK residents (one over 60), for a 4 month RTW trip next year. We were quietly relying on HC Travel's Biker Travel Insurance, but their underwriter no longer offers cover for more than 2 month trip. The only quote we've found so far is from US-based Motorcycle Express which works out about US$1500 for the two of us with a $500 excess. It's a husband and wife policy whereby the benefits differ depending on who is injured, i.e. the primary insured person (presumed the 'breadwinner') or the spouse, and it's just a no-frills medical policy.

The specific problems we're finding are :
trip length
age (Roynie is over 60)
motorcycle travel
non-UK residents

Admittedly all may change before next year, but who else can we try? What do all you other adventurous travellers use for long multi-country motorcycle trips?

Navigator Travel Insurance - been OK for me for last couple of years, very helpful on phone.

Looked at their site earlier. Haven't spoken to them, but their website specifies that you must have a full UK license, which leads me to think that it may be UK residents only. It was after office hours so we'll give them a call tomorrow - unless anyone here can confirm one way or the other.

Travel insurance

If you take out a current account with Nationwide they give you free insurance and it does cover over 125 cc.We had a spill in germany this year managed to get to Croatia and it was found my wife had a fractured ankle. No problem they flew her home.:clap

Post Office as form January 2nd 2015 will NOT cover motorcycles over 1500cc so far I have found two companies that will cover that is Dogtag and Gold Cover just a heads up!

Trailfinders are worth a try. Covered us for a potential RTW trip on two bikes, no problem.

Has Wapping and his mates worked out that K1600 riders are likely to make big claims...

I've taken out a policy with these guys:

http://www.adventuresinsurance.co.uk/

They were recommended by the travel insurance broker we use at work.

When you do the quote you can select one/both of the following;

Motorcycling with appropriate UK licence on public roads (Dirt Roads)
Motorcycling with appropriate UK licence on public roads (Tarmac Roads)

Hopefully I wont need to use the insurance but if I do I'll post up how their service is. I paid £35 for 16 days in Europe for the Part A (excludes some of the normal travel insurance offerings like losing your wallet, cancelled ferries etc).

Note that a lot of the mainstream companies I tired told me that motorcycling is only allowed as an 'incidental' activity, so if you actually set off for a tour on your own bike then you are not covered. In some cases this was not very well explained in the policy wording (you need to open their policy wording .pdf and search for 'motorcycle' or 'two-wheeled vehicle'.

Also, some told me that you are only covered for 14 days and even if you go for a longer trip and hope to be covered for the first 14 days you wont be as a longer trip invalidates the 14 day allowance (again, not well explained in the policy wording).

Aviva Travel insurance, standard ages 16-75

Covers riding motorcycle owned (not hired) over 125cc, subject to licence, helmet, protective clothing

As always, first read the policy on offer’s term and conditions carefully to ensure they match YOUR needs and not the bloke’s next door’s. Then and only then look at the premium. Repeat as necessary as often as you like and certainly each time you buy a new policy.

Holidaysafe have a duration expire date per trip my 5 week New Zealand trip had to have its own bespoke policy.
Beware you need a specialist broker to start a policy once on your trip. £150 for the remaining 10 days of a 6 week tour was my punishment for not knowing.

Carol Nash so called repatriation in Europe is a load of waffle.
After a serious accident in Bosnia they put me through to their 3rd party breakdown company who in turn told me it would cost too much so they would pay for 10 days storage and then it was up to me to get the bike home. Great when your in the major trauma unit for 3 weeks. I had phoned before the trip and was told i am covered.
A mate flew over and rode it back for me.
Endsleigh travel insurance on the other hand were fantastic..sorted air ambulance and all paperwork out.
Still recovering from a broken back in 5 places, both femurs smashed,a broken knee, 14 ribs and a punctured lung..
Carol Nash couldn't give a f#@k.
Never never again would i use them. They are not the company they used to be.

Sad about your accident but, as you mentioned, you had medical cover to which less than 50% bother to take out. Your friend is a true friend to go out of his way to help. Bosnia is not what you would call; just round the corner.

I used to use, and recommend M&S travel insurance, but they hiked the annual premium above £300. If you try and get a fresh quote (rather than accept their renewal) - M&S insist on name/address etc BEFORE quoting. So - I tried with a second address. Reduced to around £250. Still too high - so went to Post Office for a much more palatable £130. Covers all my requirements.

Will look at Endsleigh next year, though - as ‘Fireman’ has shown - The proof of the pudding etc..........

As is not uncommon it is not at all clear which policy you were claiming under for the storage and then ‘repatriation’ back to the UK of your motorcycle, following a serious crash and your extended subsequent hospitalisation.

Was it:

A. Your Personal Accident policy, the subject of this thread

B. Your Motor policy

What did your policy / policies actually say about motorcycles, damage thereto and recovery back home?

We take it that the bike did not have a mechanical ‘breakdown’. Similarly, it does not seem to have been too damaged as your friend rode it back home for you.
