'ello,

After 5 years of riding rubbish, I wonder if I were to take an advanced motorcycle training class, would I be less rubbish :)

I'm always up for extra training...

Has anyone taken an advanced class and what did you think of it? Is it worth it? And I live outside Inverurie, can you recommend someone?

Cheers :beerjug:

I've done the Police "Bikesafe" course.

The evening lecture was just the usual, what gear to wear, rules of the road, look at this picture and tell me the hazards. Ok but not great.

The one to one road route with a police rider was great.
I'll follow you for a while, that's a weird feeling, then you stop for a chat about road positioning and such like, then it's you follow me for a while, think you're quick, try following a copper on a bike.
Best fun was overtaking a line of traffic, at more than the speed limit, while being followed by the fuzz, wish I could have seen the faces of the motorists.:D
I will admit it did make a difference to my riding, I thought more about positioning, hazards and the like.

Phone your local copshop and they should be able to help you.

For advanced riding just contact either the police or the local training schemes

Can recommend the IAM route as per last post.

If your after "one to one", try Keith Henderson. He runs Ecosse Advanced (he's in the book) and as a Police class one rider, he knows a thing or three. Don't know what he charges, but all the people I know who have tried him have all agreed how much they have benefited.

Which ever way you go, any extra training is a good thing.

A bit further to travel, but can recommend the 2 day Advanced Rider course run by John Macdonald (ex Scottish Motorcycle champion). They are based in Kirkcaldy with the course run on public roads around the town and up into Perthshire (day 2). Instructor plus 2 trainees linked by Autocom so plenty of 1:1 coaching. http://www.pro-scot.com/motorcycle_training/advanced

I had been riding for years when I did this course in 2001. It improved my confidence, bike handling and cornering skills no end. It cost a few hundred £'s however this has been reapid numerous time over by the extra enjoyment I get from my riding.

I have also twice been on the MAC courses, 2 days < £100 with B&B included. Bob Crawley in Kelso in an excellent MAC instructor. This course is based more on the police system of riding, road positioning, observation and safety. Last time I went on this course there were 3 of us. Bob can be contacted via www.bikeecosse

Re advanced bike training

I can recommend I.A.M. have done the coarse you can get as much 1:1 training as you require to pass advanced test, which is done by an external examiner. (Kieth is one)
I've also had extra training from Kieth which is also good, but could work out quite expensive if you do all your training with him.
Overall I.A.M. helped me most, I think most people that do the I.A.M. coarse come out with a greatly increased riding ability. If you want to get a taste to see if its for you you can get ride check. for £25? for that you get a full assessment with a senior observer they can explain areas for any improvements.
