Starter Strip

great thread! :clap
found 3 loose magnets in mine. Question though: how do you go about re-glueing these? Or is it preferable bing them to a specialist who can do it?

Went that far on my own, i'd like to finish this fix myself if thats possible...

cheers

Hi All,

Mine was just the bendix...Thank God €€€!!!

Got one for 45€'s from an Italian brand and it's working perfectly since the last 3 months!

just done this job and found the floating plate, I have bent the outer tabs out slightly and fixed in place with a little JB weld so lets see if that stays in place:nenau:bow

I've had several 1150s but my current one has always had a sluggish starter motor.
The bike's never failed to fire up but on cold mornings I always wonder if it will.

I stripped the starter quite a while ago finding nothing wrong so left it alone until this week when I bought a brand new Anlasser starter motor from Germany for £29.92 as they were doing a special offer, postage was £16 and it arrived in less than 3 days.

I remember reading some time ago that these were offered by some companies as an upgrade due to better planetary gear arrangement.:nenau

Fitted it this morning and it's perfect, engine spins up much quicker from cold now:)

Price has gone up a couple of quid but still a bargain

Spot on "How To" Mike, that will be printed off and kept. :thumb2

Thanks, Ian

Yes, very useful & I have similar issues with mine, but a bit basic maybe, but how do I print off this article please ?

Go to the bottom of Mike's original post, put you mouse pointer in the bottom right hand corner and click and hold the left mouse key, then move the mouse to the top of the left side of the screen letting the screen scroll up highlighting it all. Once highlighted right click and copy then paste it into word and print. :thumb

Okay thanks for that, I had been searching the screen for an unseen button, maybe a useful facility for the future.

Very interesting and useful thread. Especially for those of us relatively new to the bikes.

While we're on the forum know-how. Can someone help explain how to drop images into the post. Instructions on how to do this on the site are err...not so helpful! Wanted to do this with my brakes issue post but had to muddle through. Help /explanation welcome :jager;)

Just wanted to add my thanks to Mike for this excellent post. Just stripped my failed starter and found the oil catch plate had moved and was starting to short out.

Reassembled and all is well again. Has anyone had any success in securing the oil catch plate more securely in place?

Excellent post; had major issues starting my stead, purchased a new battery, scratched a few splinters from the head and today decided to take the starter motor apart. The metal grease retaining plate looked like a sieve; it had arched out so much. Plate removed and the bike kicks over first time. Again, thanks for the post.

Valeo seem to have a problem

My R1150GS wouldn't start after being stood on trickle for a few weeks. As battery was original from 2003 bought a new one without thinking. Starter spun but no engagement. Mmm - can't be starter motor as only done 16,000 miles and starter had to be replaced just out of warrantly by first owner who I bought it from with 7000 miles on the clock. Never had to replace a starter motor on any vehicle ever owned and I'm now retired. So bought a new replacement off ebay for £69 - obviously came from China but looked OK and worked. Started to strip the Valeo and didn't know next step so came to this thread which is so good. Just had to go ahead of instructions and could see burn marks on grease cover and could see insulation on windings had rubbed off and coils were shorting. Staggered to see next illustration showed an even worse case than mine. Then found it had happened to others. How do Valeo think they'll get away without anybody spotting this obvious design fault? (as well as lose magnets). Glad I got a chinese version as must be better than Valeo!

I'm guessing this really ought to be a rhetorical question but can someone please confirm my suspicions that the Armature in the Pics is FUBAR please?
Should those two Flat Spots be there?
Other than that the Internals look fine but the Starter has been apart previously as the Rivets have disappeared.
I've been having the same problems as those outlined above and have just stripped the Starter to find this.
Any helpful Comments gratefully received.

TIA

those look like deliberately machined out areas which are done to balance the armature at manufacture, not a problem .

Thanks your Reply Spanner Monkey.
Shortly after I posted the Photos above I discovered the reason behind the problems I was having.
The Internals are actually almost new and someone has clearly Stripped and Rebuilt the Starter prior to my Ownership.
Even the Grease Cap is as new.
However, when I looked again at how it had been previously reassembled and also spotted the tell-tale Rub Marks inside the Housing, all became clear.
There are two small Washers on the end of the Armature Shaft.
One is a Spacer Washer which lives between the Armature Bush on the inside of the Housing and the Housing itself.
The other is a Shim Washer which lives below the "E" Clip on the outside of the Housing.
Both had been installed on the outside.
When the Working Parts became warm as the Motor was running, they naturally expanded and the expansion was such that it caused the Armature Bush to rub against the inside of the Housing, restricting the movement of the Armature itself.
Hence, when the Bike was cold it turned over as normal but when it got hot it would barely turn over on the Starter at all.
Once I had rebuilt the Starter with the two Washers in their rightful places, the problem went away.
Unfortunately I didn't discover this "Revelation" until I had ordered a new Starter from Germany so now I have a Spare.
