Stuck in SE Asia.....Thank you Covid 19
I went to take it for its first mot this morning having only 1000 miles and never seen rain I didn't expect any problems but as soon as I switched on I noticed the dash was completely dead, no self test, no back lighting just nothing. I fired up the bike and it works fine but I had to cancel the mot as I have no readouts and the indicators and lights do not work. The rear brake does work though which is a blessing.

Any ideas where to start, I'm heading over seas at the end of next month and had wanted to sell the bike as I'm certain I can't put it in storage with my household goods but most of all I'd like it working again.

Any ideas welcomed, I've checked all fuses etc and battery good.

Are you aware of the 'Guzzi Tech' website? someone there may be able to help.

I'm afraid thats a common fault. No dash readout means the bikes fekd.
However to help you out in a tight spot i have a grand here to help with your relocation ,i can collect the bike tomorrow.

Always glad to help out.

Andy those bikes are notorious for the circuit boards fogging and corroding inside

Despite being kept out of the rain

Maybe carefully slip cover off and spray a fine mist of ACF50 in there?

Well my R1150GSA had just been sold and I was desperate to haev something to ride in the last weeks before I leave for the USA so I wheeled out the Guzzi to trace the fault on the dash and rear light.

First job was to recheck all the connectors at the back end of teh bike but all okay. Next remove the tank following Rushy's guidelines from his thread (many thanks Rushy I owe you one).

Once the tank was off I could see all teh connectors near the ECU so split and reconected all. Unfortunately I didn't recheck each time I checked a connector s son' know which one it was for future reference but hey ho I have the dash clocks again (these were intermitent) and I have a rear light (which wouldn't come on and means I can get it mot's on Monday)

I noticed when I split some of the connecters they were filled with a clear like gel which I can't think would be too good for a good clean contact.

I also noticed 2 connectors which were not connected (last pic) anyone know what these are for!! (heated grips, Abs maybe:nenau ).

Roll on tomorrow when I give it a soak test around Perthshire :p

'Clear gel'

Would this not be 'contact gel' to stop any corrosion?

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be able to confirm/or ridicule this:beerjug:

Good luck for the move Andy,i take it your holding on to the guzzi.

It should have heated grip connections, on my breva with the same clocks there is a little grip icon, which goes from one to 3, when you switch on the grips:beerjug:

Don't know what the plugs look like, as they were fitted when I bought it!

Thanks for that Ian. Looks like I spoke to soon as went t take the Guzzi out for a spin this morning and the clocks dead again but everything else working. Filled up with fuel and set off and within a mile engine dies with elec failure :-( It started again no worries and tonight everything working again but went out on my GSPD instead.... Back to the drawing board:(

Well its been 4 years and Im back from the USA and retired due to getting Cancer again last year. So I took the wraps off the Guzzi again and put in a brand new battery and hey ho it worked okay so took it for an MOT and it passed without any problems this time so I thought it was maybe a under performing battery last time not quite giving a high enough voltage to power the instrument electronics. Anyway thats too easy as it failed a day or so later with the same symptoms IE Clocks just go dead after about 20 mins and hence none of the indicators, lights, brake lights or speedo, mileometer etc work...... I'm going to take it in to the shop to get them to run their diagnostics on it but as its an intermittent fault I don't expect an easy fix.......

I dont suppose in the time i've been away has anyone had a similar problem and know what caused it....... I thought not :D

Behind the headlamp are a myriad of connectors, they get filgree green corrosion. Disconnect the battery, remove, clean with contact cleaner every terminal
common guzzi fault
" they are all like that sir" it's character
make sure you have both keys and code if it's a carc model

Italian electrics were crap in the 1980s, to be honest, little has changed
" click no crank" is a common switch / relay fault
battery needs to be good :thumb2

Thanks Magwa. Ive tried all the above without success. The connections had a gel like substance on them which i presume is for stopping any water ingress and ensuring a good connection. The battery is a new one and the bike still exhibit the same Symptoms (IE Dashboard goes dead). I'm thinking now more along the lines of there is a faulty voltage regulator or a faulty dashboard (Which seem to fail a bit looking on Guzzi Websites). I don't want to spend nearly a grand on a new dash for the same fault to occur. Its very frustrating made more frustrating as all my toold still locked up in storage.......

Try here
its a common problem in guzzi land
http://www.guzziriders.org/general-electrical-issues_forum9.html
good luck;)

Apparently a common fault as described starts with condensation in the dash, followed by corrosion of the electronics and expensive terminal failure
some people have stripped the whole dash and cured the problem
that's way beyond my capabilities :(

As a random thought
I had this fault on my last
honda vfr800
it was a faulty worn out corroded ignition switch
I bought a £15 new old stock oem part and cured it
just a thought!

Sometimes simple things

Sorry to hear about your health issues Andy :( I hope you can get the right treatment.

In the meantime have you tried speaking to an experienced Guzzi dealer ? You could try Twiggers in Leicestershire as I've heard loads of good stuff about them or Streffords in Worcester , although they have given up the franchise quite recently I know they are very knowledgable .

Good luck getting sorted and I can't believe it's 4yrs since you buggered off

Thanks for the kind words Rushy. I was in Houston when I was diagnosed and had my surgery and treatment there to so couldn't have been in a better place. Its chalk and cheese the care Ive had since I returned which has been appalling and not the NHS I remember.

There's only 1 dealer in Scotland near Falkirk and I will have a chat with them to see what they think. I'm begining to think its the instrument cluster at fault as seems quite common but very expensive to buy and find out that wasn't the issue. The local dealer where the bike came from gave up the dealership but ive spoken to the owner as he has a 1200 Sport to as his own bike and he tells me he has managed to get hold of the diagnostic software so will probably give them a try first although would prefer a specialist used to dealing with Guzzis. Buhd has just giving me the number of a Guzzi independent too so I'll chat with him too.

Yes it was Sept 2013 when I left.... time flies when your having fun.:p

Go onto Moto Guzzi fb forum. There’s a step by step guide on where and how to hacksaw 2 tiny grooves into the dash that allows any condensation to disperse while bike is on side stand, if I can find the link I will post it.

Did it on my 2006 Breva and no more issues arose.

Hope this helps.

I’ll have a look but to be honest I don’t think it’s a condensation issue as it’s never been in the rain, always kept in a dry garage and zero signs of moisture in instrument glass. If you do find the link I’ll check it out though.👍👍
