Charley Boorman completes epic American adventure riding a new R 1200 GS.

Extreme Frontiers: USA ends on a high with a huge biker convoy arriving at the iconic Venice Beach.

Charley Boorman has completed an epic ten-week adventure, criss-crossing the United States of America on a BMW R 1200 GS adventure-sports motorcycle while filming his exciting new series Extreme Frontiers: USA.

Along the way, Charley’s adventures included braving the frozen Alaskan wilderness for hostile environment training with the US Army, diving in Pearl Harbour to see the wrecks and flying a replica of the Wright Brothers’ fabric and string glider at Kitty Hawk.

Extreme Frontiers: USA, the third in Boorman’s new series, saw the BMW-riding adventurer and travel-writer make his way from Hawaii to Alaska, via New York, Utah, Montana and California – and many more states and cities across the length and breadth of America.

Charley and his producer/fellow adventurer Russ Malkin travelled around the USA on a pair of new 2013 R 1200 GS motorcycles, the same model Charley has back in the UK. The duo rode over 5,000 miles on tarmac, desert, gravel and dirt, putting the adventure bikes to the test in some of the most challenging – and spectacular – locations in North America.

Charley’s knowledge and skills earned from over a decade of motorcycle adventures, including the Long Way Round and his Dakar race experiences, proved to be invaluable as he battled through swamps, rivers and sand dunes.

The duo’s trip was made even more memorable by once-in-a-lifetime events, including flash flooding in the driest place in the world (Death Valley), being battered by squalls and storms while sailing a tall ship out of Boston Harbour, even flying high above the New Mexico deserts in a hot air balloon. Charley also ticked one off his personal ‘bucket list’ by racing along the beautiful and vast Bonneville Salt Flats, home to countless land speed records through history. Here Charley and Russ got to meet and ride with the racers who call the Salt Flats home.

Towards the end of the epic journey, the pair were joined by a huge convoy of over 100 motorcycles and riders for the final stretch. Friendly local bikers escorted Charley and Russ on the last few miles to the famous Venice Beach, wrapping up an amazing ten-week adventure.

Charley Boorman said: “Extreme Frontiers: USA was an amazing trip and I had the most incredible adventures along the way. Once again, I had the opportunity to ride a BMW R 1200 GS which made the trip even more enjoyable. The bikes coped with everything from deserts to floods, ice to mud and they made our journey that bit easier. I can’t wait for everyone to be able to see the new Extreme Frontiers series on TV – I hope they have as much fun watching it as Russ and I had filming!”

Russ Malkin said: "Having just finished extreme frontiers USA - both BMW 1200 GS bikes went faultlessly over 7,000 miles, which meant we could enjoy the trip and adventures, as we knew they wouldn't let us down. They are engineered to perfection.”

The Extreme Frontiers: USA programme will be broadcast on Channel Five later this year.

He never pissed and whinged about his gearbox!

You always know how epic the trip is by the number of different riding jackets you have...

Hmmmmmmm!

Different bikes in pic 1 to the red one in 2,3 & 4!

Wonder what Hercule Poirot would make of that?

I'd love to do a trip like that but don't want to watch Charley Boring doing it.

I like these programmes because they are real, no set pieces every shot counts and just a small crew.
A good promotion for BMW too so every one can see there's no problems or troublesome niggles in the current GS, this sort of programme would expose that.

Cue harp music, its all a dream.

Epic adventure my arse, It's called a HOLIDAY, jammy git

i know lots wouldnt want to watch all cos he is maybe not as well known but
pick film 18 as a starter then watch the rest  :thumb

Well i'm looking forward to watching it.........Harmless fun and everyone likes Charlie!

Russ Malkin i'm not so sure about though and some folks say he can peel an orange without taking his hand out of his pocket!:D

I like old Charlie so I'll look forward to this. I think he's a pretty harmless character who by pure chance has made a career for himself riding bikes and larking about so good luck to him :thumby:

At a recent trip to the BMW ORS, we stayed in Simons Hotel, when we came down in the morning we were greeted by Charlie and Simon who cooked breakfast for us, all I can say is that they are top blokes and are both living the dream.

Wonder if they'll show all the times Russ had to dye his hair over the ten weeks. :D

He's wearing the same shoes in the kitchen as he is crossing the flood in Death Valley.

REspekt!

:beerjug:

I'll be watching this with interest, especially in the light of Sgt Bilco's post regarding his trip to the USA next year which I am interested in.

Treat it for what it is - a TV programme with the inevitable scripting, editing, faux deadlines and predictable over-dramatisation of fairly innocuous situations that goes with it. But at least it is motorbikes on the box which beats reality TV/home makeovers/cooking programmes/soap operas etc etc etc. As a minority interest pursuit we get little enough exposure on the idiot lantern so let's not knock it when we do get some coverage. :thumb

As with Top Gear though there will be the usual bunch of miserable grumpy gits on here who will already be sharpening the knives in order to pan it - but strangely enough will tune in to watch it every week :augie
