Despite looking long and hard i cant find any clear and step by step instructions on how to do the antenna mod on a Kenwood 3201 or 3301 radio. Can someone point me in the right direction please and supply a link to where i can buy the bits n bobs required. Thanks peeps.:D

Right got the aerial adapters on order and befor I get the aerial kit. Any one got a picture of the aerial kit fitted to a 1200GS? trying to think of best position for it, I always have a top box on so maybe mounted up high next to it!

All Done. Going to make some better, more substantial mounts and tidy the wiring but otherwise all working. Do a proper right up with pictures once I take them... Couple to show so far

Tidy install :thumb2

Who did you use to supply the cable with the SMA-M panel mount fitting for the antenna?

Stu.

Looks like the Bikers Oracle antenna kit. Works well though technically I think the antenna gain pushes a 0.5w Kenwood into illegal territory in terms of ERP. Having said that I've never heard of anyone getting prosecuted for it by OFCOM, plenty run around with 4w radios hooked up them without issue. The fact that you're a moving target helps and aren't going to cause any other PMR users anything but temporary disturbance. It's only likely a local business would know about the regs and complain if you were 'washing them out' on a regular basis. I wouldn't recommend it for, say, a bike instructor role though as the potential risk to being prosecuted as a business doesn't make it worthwhile. An extension, SMA or BNC to suit, along with a suitable bracket to get the antenna that came with the radio upright and higher up is the most I would recommend in that case. This last method is perfectly legal, even with a radio modified to take an external antenna.

A high up mounting position, such as the OP has shown, helps a little compared to the optional supplied numberplate mounting plate. Keeping the antenna above the metal parts of the bike is what counts here.

It might be worth considering RAM parts to mount, versatile and flexible allowing you to adjust the mounting depending on the luggage configuration etc. Not that cheap though.

Not a GS admittedly...

Hi Stu. Got all the gear from Troggy on the Bikers Oracle Forum, I'm sure there are a few links to it at beginning of this thread. If you get in touch with him he was very helpful. Kit I got was for 2 bikes. Lead was already made up and comes with the screw on cover as well. The mount is just slightly to the side of top box so clear line of sight front to back and even with the vario fully expanded still a good 80/100mm showing over the top. We have the topboxes on all the time as have a powerpoint and also radios in them, so not an issue as to sticking out
Got a lot of pictures of what was needed to do. Was going to do a mini write up of the job but some of the pictures not too clear will have a go anyway.

Bikers Oracle Central seems to be having issues at the moment, seems very slow to me. Anyway, here's a link to the relevant thread, you might have to be a little bit patient with it. All Troggy's posts have a link in the footer that leads to a post with ordering information for the antenna kit.

After lots of reading of thread on various forums decided to add the external aerials and modify my existing Kenwood 3301 radios. Got the aerial kits from Troggy on the bikers oracle forum and radio sockets from Ebay. Lots of info about modifying the radios but downloaded the service manual for Kenwood 3202, basically the same, some useful info on about removing and fitting the circuit board. Need to be careful using the soldering iron and found a solder remover/sucker very useful. Simple job just need to be slow and steady, more pictures/advice in this thread. http://ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/370523-Remote-aerial-for-Kenwood-TK-3310 Screws that hold the new SMA aerial socket in place are 2.5 x 4mm got 10 2.5 x 5 for £1.25 on good old EBay. Have marked the solder joint needed to be unsoldered on the picture.
Not been able to get a new orange seal for aerial hole but a cut down grommet will do for now, radios in the top box anyway. If you fit under your seat maybe take care and put the radio in a plastic bag or something.
After much deliberation decided on the mounting position. Not too far out to get caught or close to hinder pillion and as high as poss. Made some brackets from aluminium flat bar, will replace with better stainless ones at some point. Used an existing top box mounting plate bolt just 10mm longer bolt. Easy to route cable through an existing grommet I had in the top box for the radio and power socket. Heavy duty Velcro secured radio in position. Picture of radio in its original position in top box was not too bad.
Just found a couple of plastic screw mounts that work great as holders for the aerial cover all done.

Did a test before/ after with radios as they were and with new aerials. Not scientific buy any stretch of the imagination but best I can offer. I live in the country so not much buildings but undulating so dips and hollows and lots of cows :D
One bike stayed at home and I rode off till radio started to loose clarity/breaking up. Use GPS to get straight lines when home. Original setup started to drop off at about 2 miles* new aerials fitted gave about another three quarters of a mile. Not bad but when I looked at the points on Garmin maps in a straight line the first point was only approximately 0.6/0.7mile and with new aerials went up to 0.9 mile. So maybe not massive but an improvement non the less and on long stretches of M/way with clear air may work out more. Hope to get out for a better road test later with city and hills. Will let you know. Lots of information on this mod on this and other forums and thanks to everyone I've pmed, emailed and borrowed your ideas many thanks.
Have lots more pictures and any one wants any more info just let me know.

Thanks for that :thumb2 Tis running very slow at the moment. but worth a wait. get a brew and sit and read through as lots of info and links to other sources of information.

Finally all done with super stainless steel mounts. Spoke to Mark, he of all things shiny http://www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk/
Sent my dodgy alloy mount to him and for a small contribution to his pension fund he made a couple of new ones, much better. Many thanks Mark:beerjug:

Nice job. The position enables a much longer antenna than I have, think I'll rethink mine a little :)
