XG250 Tricker Build

..................Looks like we're on schedule to have it ready for a trial run next weekend.:clap:beerjug:

Fill the tank, carry a separate can of fuel and ride until it runs out so that you at least know how far it will go on just 6 litres of fuel. I'll guess about 190 kms. :)

Yep, I was quoted 125mpt :D

I will be carrying 2 x 2Litre cans just for her (I have 18 litres on my bike without the cans) so we should have plenty of range for Iceland.

Thevfront sprocket i mentioned. I've never seen one this worn before.

That's a proper little bike is that :clap

Lovely job on the pannier frames, they look very well indeed!

You might want to have a quick look at the condition of the headstock bearings while you're tinkering, given the lack of maintenance / grease around the rear suspension and all.

Looking forward to the next instalment!

Thanks!

I think the next instalment will be putting it on a pallet for the container to Iceland. There isn't much time to do alot else now and I need to spend some time getting mine ready.

Btw, anyone seen these little gems. Found this colapsible 2.8 litre pan yesterday that fits 2 cups and 2 bowls inside it.

I realise its a stretch, but does anyone know of a breaker (or inmate) with a complete headlight and instrument cluster?

Ok, I think some further customisation is needed due to the cost of stock headlight and instruments being €566 plus vat and delivery.

Does anyone have any experience with Vapor dash/instruments? I've been in touch with them and they have an instrument cluster with mount/indicator lights for about €200 through TrailTech in the UK.

This one to be exact, with the added surround.

Luggage Rack Build

The 650 XC will take most of the weight in Magadan panniers, but I am in the process of custom building some small racks that can take our Wolfman 19 litre panniers. The idea is this bike will carry clothes and the tent roll. I'll post some pictures of that process this weekend....I hope.

The plan for Iceland, in the limited time available, is to create the racks, replace the rear shock with a Hyperpro unit, and put on a steering stabiliser. As the Tricker only has 6 litres, spare fuel will be carried by the XC on this trip. We plan to sort out some sort of Rotopax mounting for the next one. As for the rest of the mods....the trip to Iceland should dictate hat we need to work on later

Hi there mikecbrxx ! I am a newbie and I have just got a new toy - a Yamaha Tricker ! Absolutely love the rack that you built for your Iceland Trip, and I was wondering if I could ask some questions? I have plans to ride this bike to faraway land, and I would be most grateful if you could please advise me on certain aspects of your rack build. Many thanks

Sure, no problem. I actually need to do a major update on here as alot has happened to the bike while repairing after Iceland.

I'll try and get to it this weekend sometime.

Just to wet your appetite.... this is what the bike looks like today!

As promised, here are some photos of the transition from a Broken Tricker into the bike that my wife is really happy with...

2nd hand fuel tank off an American XT250 from after 2006. This increases the fuel capacity from 6 litres to 9.8 litres. Not available in Europe so had to be imported from a breaker in the USA:

Issue no 1, while the XT250 uses the same frame as the Tricker, there are differences. Here is the Tricker seat positioned with the new tank.

Bike with the Aprilia SX (maybe ETX) 125 triple, forks, brakes and wheel fitted. We (by that I mean David at Hyperpro) had to custom make the steering stem in order to make it fit.

The rear side cover fits ok, it was the front side panels that were the problem with this tank.

Looks OK....but !

First fitting of the BMW G450x front fender and headlight unit.

Now you can see the dash taking shape. The new ignition switch is actually the original switch from my BMW G650X Country. We re-used that so actually my fuel filler cap key doubles as a spare ignition key for this bike. And visa-versa of course.

Fitting the Speedo sensor for the new gauge. I decided not to use a magnetic pick-up sensor, this is a proximity sensor that reads the 6 brake disc bolts rotating. All programmable into the unit along with wheel size. Later, Against my GPS, reads exact at 40, 60 and 80 KPH.

General shot before starting to play with the looks...

More importing, unfortunately. This shot shows the XT250 seat unit ($98 + shipping), the Front Air scoops (new around $200) and rear side panels (2nd hand $30). All these had to be fitted to properly fit the new tank. It was a little costly but I hope you agree, from a looks perspective, it was very worth it. My wife is delighted....so its priceless :D

That's about it. Interesting project. I am going to have the front rim replaced with an Excel rim from Haan here in the Netherlands. We will also look at a better set of forks. Not urgent at the moment as it rides well, but these ones are not really customisable. Its not even possible to change the springs. They have to go....eventually.

This shows the bend in the forks as a result of the accident in Iceland. Was still ridden for a week after this happened.

Hello just picked up a tricker and was curious if all the XT250 plastics and tank fit on the frame without any modifications? And if so what did you have to do to make the seat tank and panels fit? Thank you!

Hi
Firstly, remember that I got parts from a modern xt250 that never shipped to Europe... only America I thing.

Then yes, they fit but you need the set to make it work. Tank, front and side panels and the seat.

However, when i get around to it, I do need to tag a couple of mounts on the front to stabalise the front fairing a bit.

A few questions

Hi Mike,

This thread is awesome, and gives me great hope to modify my Tricker. thanks a lot for sharing your experience.

I have several questions, hoping you will have time to answer me.

First I have to say that I love my Tricker. I am 170cm and 60 kgs, and I live in town (Hanoi, Vietnam), so the Tricker is perfect for my daily use. I also enjoy a lot riding the mountains, and after several trips in Northern Vietnam, I acknowledge that the Tricker is perfect for the numerous small pedestrian pathes. However, I have several problems:

- First of all, is the rear tire/wheel. I have the original wheel and a mixte tire 120/90 16, which is awful. Not stable, and very dangerous as soon as the road becomes slippery (which happens often here). I'd like to change the wheel for 17" and then mount a Continental TKC 80 150/70 B17. Do you think it would fit in the Tricker Swingarm? Do you have any advises when replacing the wheel of a bike, especially a Tricker?

- Second, I would like to change the front fork. The original is nice because light, but definitely not robust enough for the roads I drive everydays (hundreds of potholes in Hanoi) and the weekends' dirt roads. I saw that you changed the front fork for an inverted fork. What fork did you mount? Is your wife happy with it?

- Third, but not least, my rear shock absorber is not great, and when I happen to have a passenger, it is a nightmare for them (also because of the hard seat I guess...). I am not sure whether I should change it, or try to fix it. But I have no idea on how to proceed. What would you recommend? I saw you put a Hyperpro shock. Did it make a big difference compared to the original one?

That is all for now. Thanks for reading me and hoping to hear from you.

Cheers, Brice

And here is the rear tire I would like to mount on the Tricker:

Hi.

There shouldn't be any issues in re-stitching the 16 rear with a 17 rim. Maybe get an Excel one while you are doing the job. Much stronger than any standard rim. However, i would suggest a Mitas E07 or E09 rather than the tkc if they are available in Hanoi.

Doing the change will upset the geometry of the bike a little. Maybe. You will need to try it. If it does become unstable then you may need to lengthen the front forks too. Can't remember if there is any spare length that can be pushed through the triple. Maybe even upgrading the fork springs could help.

The front end i used was from an Aprillia RX125. But that took the front up to a 21 inch wheel. You could do it by re- stitching the rim to 19 and also going to an excel rim. However, it wasn't a simple change. New steering stem that needed to be machined to fit, new speedo and all new dash. May be going a little to far for you?

I would really recommend upgrading the rear shock. Not sure what options you have there though. You could contact Bas at Hyperpro service centre in Alphen aan de Rijn here in the Netherlands. He may be able to build you one remotely. I think he has the measurements for the tricker rear but you would need to specify the wheel size its for....leg length, use, that sort of thing. You can find the contact for Hyperpro Alphen online. Bas built the one for us. He is also a really good source for fork upgrade options.

I hope this helps you and good luck.

Mike
