Perhaps you have the wrong language loaded?? failing that try updating your software.
If you decide to update it back up your device by copying the whole Garmin folder of your 550 to your PC, so if it goes pear shaped you can easily copy it back.
Try updating to a different voice, I use British Emily I think and can understand it ok,

. It's not that long ago my 95 year old mother wanted to know how did I understand the GPS while we were driving in Spain as she expected it to talk in Spanish

To be fair mate, I'd think anyone would struggle with Burpengary and Koolyanobbing.

I wouldn't mind so much if it was all in Spanish if it was well pronounced.
Yes Wapping some street/town names are unpronounceable, on my recent trip I would have to text some names of towns after talking to the wife on the phone.
My spanglish speaking accent doesn't help much either, ha ha ha.
