Hi

I'm planning a long weekend jaunt to Malmo, Sweden and wondered if there were any particularly good roads/sights to take in on the way from Calais?

Alternatively, if there are better places to go for a long weekend's ride (happy to do 3-400 miles a day) along the same sort of way, I'm all ears.

Thanks

D

An extraordinary post.

Calais to Malmo (direct) is about 1,200 kms; you are doing the ride over a long-weekend (when unknown) and you are looking for things to do and 'great roads, mate' on the way. I would suggest Arnhem in Holland, the fleshpots of Hamburg and the very big bridge between Copenhagen and Malmo, possibly stopping of in Amsterdam for a spiffing spliff and not forgetting Assen, if the racing is on. There's also a whopping great dyke / sea defence thing you can ride along.

Then, in a bizarre request, you ask for possible alternatives to Malmo, 'along the same sort of way'. Which rather begs the question as to whether you want to go to Malmo for a longweekend's ride in the first place and why.

Why not, easily done.Bike, petrol and go.Follow your nose you're bound to find something good:beerjug:

If your doing 2400 K over a long weekend I doubt you'll have much time for anything other than coffee and loo breaks. :D

Malmo for a long weekend! I commend the OP on his ambitious if not his realism.:blast

Sorry if my post offended you. I was really asking in case someone said 'That'd be a pretty boring journey' or 'I've done it and it was great! Here's what I enjoyed etc' but I guess you knew that really.

Thanks all...

You'll do that no problem at all,we used to do the Bol leave on a Friday night back to work on a Monday still with a hangover.Have fun and report back

Thanks Vern. Will do.

OK, It's a pretty boring journey, for a longweekend, enlivened only by what you MIGHT see and unless of course you really MUST get to Malmo from Calais.

You haven't told us:

(1) When you plan to go

(2) How long you have reserved to ride the 1200 kms between departing Calais and arriving Malmo.

A long weekend suggests to me all of Friday, all of Saturday, all of Sunday and most of Monday. But that could be wrong, as the long weekend might include the time you intend to spend in Malmo itself and - for all I know - coming back too.

(3) You ask for other suggestions 'if there are better places to go for a long weekend's ride, along the same sort of way'? What does that mean? Along the same sort of way towards where? Towards Malmo, towards Sweden / towards Denmark / Germany / Holland / Belgium / France? Or do you really want to go somewhere else entirely?

(4) What made you pick Malmo, as bizarre a destination in Sweden (let alone Europe) as one might think of.

As to:
But I guess you knew that really
Well, guess again, chum.

Put it into really simple words, what you are trying to achieve, over what precise period and (hopefully) with what aim; to help us to help you. For instance, it's not even clear if you intend to come back to Calais within the same long weekend.

Nah, feck it. It's 1200 kms, broadly NE, set off early, you can do it in a day. Ferry from Puttgarden (check the times) to Rodbyhaven.

The ride through Denmark is a tad boring. If you want a ride for a long weekend, then I would head towrds Luxembourg and Germany (Eiffel region) and perhaps even as far as the Black Forest if you want to pile on the miles

Do you want me to post you a little brush so you can sweep the sand out of your vagina?

I love that you give me a load of grief for not phrasing my question exactly specifically enough for you but continue to try and get me to give more details as if I am going to have a conversation with you! I really don't need your advice that badly that I'm going to put up with your weird attitude thanks. 35k posts? Wow, you should try riding a bit more....might chill you out.

To the others, a genuine thank you and I'll let you know what we end up doing. It seems asking for advice on here is not the done thing unless you have a pre-agreed template from Wapping on how to explain your intentions.

You asked for help. I'm trying to give it to you in a constructive manner but it's difficult if you decide not to fill in the gaps, not least how long you really have in mind to ride the 1200 kms. For instance, you could lose a morning just looking at Arnhem but that's useless as a suggestion if you need to spend the time moving forward in order to get to Malmo on-time for whatever reason you've pinpointed it as a destination.

As to alternatives to Malmo, Sweden for a long weekend? There are several threads where I (and others) have posted up - along with routes - long weekend breaks in France, as far down as Dijon, or across to the D-Day beaches in Normandy, or into the Belgian / Luxembourg Ardennes or down to the Morvan any of which might suit you (or whoever it is you are going with) down to the ground. Failing that RiDE magazine has a host of free to download suggestions as, bizarre as it may seem, you are not the first to be all revved up with no place to go. There are also lots of sticky threads with lots of links to Germany, France, Belgium, ADAC maps, other pre-made suggestions and the like. Fill your boots, chum; any or all of them might make a great alternative to trundling across the flat lands of Holland, Denmark and the southern tip of Sweden to Malmo.

But hey-ho. Enjoy your long weekend's ride from Calais to Malmo or wherever it is you finally decide to go.

You've upset that nice chap. :nod

Judging by some other posts he does seem to get very cross very quickly.

Here's a suggestion to cheer him up, suitable for a long weekend. It's in the opposite direction of Malmo but he did ask for better places to go than across the flatlands of Holland, Germany and Denmark on the diagonal to the south of Sweden. It will fit nicely into his 300 miles in a day, too.

Cant Denmark be avoided entirely ?

We are likely to ride that way next year, to at least Helsingborg and hopefully as far as Norway, if time permits.

.

Yes. Head across Germany on the diagonal via Lubeck and take the ferry. It's the way many Swedes do it. Pump Calais to Malmo in to Google maps, it's the route it spits out. From Malmo it's straight up the Baltic coast to Helsingborg.

There again, Denmark is not a big country. Just flat, like much of Sweden.

Lubeck and the other old German Hanseatic towns are nice. Not many bods ever visit the north German Baltic coast, so it's worth going. No mountains, just different.

I have actually been to Malmo, but it was in 1970, in a 2cv starting from Frankfurt, because I was working there at the time. But other than that, it was the same.

Malmo then was a bit of a non destination, I only went because it was in yet another country, and you went in a ferry then. Perhaps I was too young to appreciate the finer points.

Camping on the Olympic Stadium at Amsterdam was a bit special. While in Amsterdam I visited the Paradiso, which was a very cool destination then. There were other nice things about Amsterdam at the time. I bought a decent leather jacket from the flomarkt on Waterlooplein. A very casual place.

A day dropping in on the small towns like Delft and Lyden. Quaint places, friendly people back then.

The flood defences are impressively large.

Visited Hamburg and had a trip round the harbour in a rickety old boat, looked at the U-boot pens.

Lubeck was the nicest places. We went up to the Iron Curtain just up the road. Grim.

Up the Jutland peninsular and crossed into Denmark. The border supermarket had, right at the till next to the chewing gum, the hardest core porn I have ever been embarrassed to see. Once that was out of the way, the Danes were incredibly friendly.
Copenhagen is a great place to get an introduction to the general expensiveness of Scandinavia. Actually I liked Copenhagen, although the little mermaid is exactly that - little. We camped just outside as in pre internet days, no one knew anything before hand, we just set off and dealt with difficulties as they arose. Stupid huh?

Malmo was not so interesting, not helped because we had to catch the ferry back fairly quickly - now I've read Wallender, I may be more enthralled.

The return via Rodby/Puttgarten was a pain because it meant you needed to be "there", leaving no time to do anything else in the morning, and the arrival seemed quite late.

Had a huge row with a woman in a shop in Celle - she refused to serve me because I had long hair. It was only 25 years after the defeat of nazism, maybe she was still disappointed? Brits very much still considered the Army of Occupation back then (by some).

Trip took a week, but a 2cv would only trundle at about 50mph down hill, and the A5 is quite hilly.

If I was the OP, I would probably visit the Baltic States, or at least Poland. The ex Warsaw Pact countries are changing fast. I imagine Malmo and Sweden are in stasis in comparison.
Berlin is an interesting place too.

Have a good time.

The bod has a 'long weekend' (four days, at a guess) he'll maybe struggle to do Calais, Berlin and the Baltic States... Unless he gets his skates on.

PS Malmo is not much more exciting 45 years after your 1970 trip, I assure you. But, it's on his radar.....

PPS The Iron Curtain is now gone, you were lucky to see it when you did
