I understand BMW Advantec Ultimate 5w40 oil is made by Shell. Do Shell make the same oil without the BMW badge and high price?

As I understand the closest you can get is Shell Advance 4T Ultra 10W-40. It is based on the same PurePlus technology, according to the Shell website. And, it is slightly MORE expensive than the BMW branded one ...

Shell say that oil is NOT recommended for the LC 1200s.

Opie Oils state that Shell Advance 4T Ultra 10W-40 is API SL / JASO MA

The owners manual also states that the oil should be SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA-2. Personally I went for Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T. There are deals available on Amazon for 4litres.

My LC has never needed a top up between services unlike my previous 1200 and 1150 GSA's so I would save your cash (unless you are changing your own oil)

On tour mine uses oil, no where near as much as the old 1150 or 1200 tc but if the level drops by more than 1/4 on the sight glass ie about 1/2 litre it is as rattly as hell on start up and tickover

Same here. Not put a drop in myself in 15K miles. Used a little between the 600 and 6000 services, but has never dropped below the max mark in the sight glass - why is it always overfilled at dealer servicing?

I queried that with Shell about a year ago. Their emailed reply (lost in an upgrade!) was that the 10/40 was NOT recommended and the website would be changed. Should have said in due course, when time permits and the wind is in the right direction. That reply came after the customer enquiry team at Shell went back to their specialists. It was the Shell specialist who said don't use it, not the customer advisers.

I just had my 12k service done, my mate is a mechanic with a trade account and contacted shell, they do not make that oil available to the public or traders......... my guy got me Fuchs Silkoline Pro 4 plus 5W-40. The dealer said it was fine

Because they can't be arsed taking some out when they put in the prescribed amount for a dry engine.Useless bastards.

+1 for Castrol Power 1 Racing 4T

My bike was so overfilled on the 1st service it was over the sight glass in seconds of getting off the bike. The dealership then argued with me that they measured the amount used and I had to go to the general manager to get any results. Clearly they don't understand what the sight glass is used for.

There is oil left in the engine after it stops flowing/dripping.
If you lean the bike over, left & right as far as you can more oil will come out.
If you shine a torch down thru the oil filler hole on the rhs cylinder you will see pockets of oil remaining. I assume the same for the lhs.
In total, likely not a great quantity remaining, but the amount of oil you need to add to get the oil level in the sight glass to go from the middle of the circle to the top is not much either.

If the service guy is simply adding the 'nominal' amount BMW say is required, without using the sight glass to set the final level, then he/she is a fecking idiot and should not be working on motorbikes.

Also, to get an accurate oil level reading in the sight glass, make sure the floor is level where the center stand is.

Funny because the Mechanic, Service Advisor, Service Manager and General Manager all repeated the same bullshit. I got my money back for the oil!

Very frustrating to see a 20 year old kid working on your 2 week old $31k AUD bike.

not all 20 yr olds are incapable. judging by the content of this site most 60yr old tossers are a bigger liability.:D

At 20 years, most dealer mechanics would have completed a 3 year apprenticeship and have an NVQ4 or 5 level qualification
