Can you get a spring compressor on it, compress the spring then adjust by hand, if no spring compressor you may be able to compress it with a small ratchet strap

I have a hinged C spanner - one of those might afford better access. Kawasaki are bit guilty of this. I remember a friend once telling me that he had to remove the rear shock on a ZZR600 to change the spring preload.
I wonder if lifting the back wheel off the ground might take the loading off the spring and allow you to shift it by hand?
