Fantastic write up, have really enjoyed it and am super jealous. I was away for a month in South America and can't believe you managed six weeks without getting wet! I got a tad damp on more than one occasion.

Nice to see tea being drunk whilst the bike being cleaning :D

Thanks for the PM Simon. I rarely visit the site these days so I missed the entire story but made up for it by reading the lot in three sittings - the joys of retirement and relaxing on Orkney. A great read. So many memories brought back and great to be reminded that I've only scratched the Iranian surface (and the itch).

Thanks for taking the trouble of sharing your experiences, I know it takes time. We must meet up some time and share memories.

Well done.

Thank you David and others for following - it has encouraged me to write the blog and now I have a good place to refresh my memories.

Which reminds me - I was unable to load the video of my Ashura dance routine in the mountains near Yazd so let's try again - my 'Strictly' contribution is from about 43 secs in...I think

Thanks for the report Simon. Iran is an itch that's getting harder and harder to ignore. Damn you anyway. ;)

Aidan just remember there is not a to be had - I mention it since I assume Jockser will be coming too

Just wanted to say that it's been a pleasure reading your report, Simon. Inspiring stuff on so many levels :beerjug:

Bit puzzled by the whole cleaning the bike epilogue though... what's that all about?

Iran

Simon, what a superb rr, It's a bit like being there too! I also have an 1150, I,too keep worrying what might break when away from home, but so far so good. It is an inspiration, especially as i have retired too.
Cheers:beerjug:, John B

There's beer to be had in Iran ... I didn't go without!

It's under the counter, they sell it in brown paper bags (still in the bottles or tins I might add) and you don't sit in public drinking it ... but its there to be had for sure :thumb

:beerjug:

Only if you make it yourself (which is illegal of course). Wharra waste!

why Peter I have turned the finest wine into water on the odd occasion. It might be rewarding to do without for a time, kinda like Lent of old. love to see Iran but hoping for something more south and West next year, and there is no difficulty with vino there! O'Higgins country! must sell something first!

Fantastic ride report .. just read over the past 2 days .. yeh I know i'm late to the party .. but fantastic read ... now just how do I get a non UK passport :) ..

Thanks Sloth and Mr K.

Yes the trip was a few months ago but has been in my mind recently as I was contemplating travelling via the US on an upcoming trip but the Iranian visa in my passport may make that problematic!

In an earlier thread I talked about my decision not to go up to Ardabil in the mountains bordering the Caspian because of the doubtful weather as winter approached

At the time I was in touch (via advrider.com) with a Romanian biker (I did not actually meet him, or ANY foreign motorcycle traveller, in all of Turkey and Iran!).

He decided to brave the weather and head up there. The picture below shows what happened to him. He was stranded and had to have the bike trucked down to Tabriz

I hope he will post his ride report as it promises to be an interesting one

Over 5 years ago, now, this trip. But as the usual route to the ‘Stans closes off, this could be another way…via Turkmenistan. Or tempting to carry on East to Pakistan :augie

Simon, these latest posts is making me think that I (with a UK passport) will not be able to go through Iran, is that the case? I'm not bothered about the danger of either Iran or Pakistan, but the practicality. I've already eschewed going via the 'Stans because of proximity to Russia (and the fact that I didn't relish crossing the Caspian sea, but had opted to go via Astrakhan in Russia, before Putin insisted on his jaunt), also that there was a significant cost in getting one's vehicle through China, my goal is India.
From what I'm reading, it looks like at the very minimum I'll have to pay to have an escort to cross Iran, is that so?
