Along the Pyrenees and back again. ADAC map and GPX file

We have a week to meander down to the Prades area in the eastern Pyrenees where we then have a weeks stay booked.
You're right in the middle of the Rally Espana stages there. You'll have a ball for the week.
Just avoid dropping down to Salou :barf

After that we have 2 week to take a convoluted scenic route home.
Head north into the Pyrenees proper. I defy you to find a bad (non-main) road. Even some of the main roads are brilliant

Have fun :thumb

Cheers. After our weeks stay near Prades I quite fancied taking in some of the french Alps balcony roads and then head further north and into the Black Forest then back maybe via Zebrugga to the UK.
Not booked a return channel crossing yet so Europe is my lobster ;p

bump ...... slightly off topic, does anyone know which Spanish map numbers published by the spanish cartography peeps, cover the east-west route on the spanish side of the border that are equivelent to the French IGN maps for the Pyrenees, I have the IGN maps #166,167,173, and 174, and would like to aquire the spanish equivelent.

I`m crossing to Bilbao on the 12th Aug (2 night crossing), but due to a change of plans (shorterned vacation time) I`m gonna turn east towards the Pyrenees and follow the ADAC routes rather than south to spain/portugal, and have booked the 1st night at Bera, then winging it across the Pyrenees and depending on the fickle weather head on up towards Milau and the Tarn gorge before bimbling up to the channel following the Ride Millau route and returning home around the 23rd-25th

None! In Catalonia there is a 1: 50 000 series but in the rest of Spain there's no equivalent!

The best you can do is the Michelin Zoom series - 1: 200 000 - or various specialist maps for the national parks, etc.

If you are following the ADAC routes, you could probably do it just using the ADAC map itself, with maybe just a little help from Google / a reasonable GPS device or similar. If not, the Michelin (or some local equivalent) maps mentioned by Simon will do you.

Just drop into a reasonable local bookshop, many supermarkets of a decent size or many petrol stations and find a map or maps to suit you, not least as they are personal things.

Spanish Pyrenees - Recommended Roads

Hi,
I did a tour of the Spanish side in July and rode some cracking roads. I used the N-260 as the back-bone. It was great but the listed roads below were better IMHO. I've tried to list roughly from west to east.

I used Sort and Llivia as bases. I would recommend Sort but not Llivia so much (no character, for me). La Seu d'Urgell looked like it was a nice town and was well situated. Sant Llorenc de Morunys would put you in the middle of some killer roads if you didn't mind the relative isolation. Berga also looked like a nice town towards the eastern end.

The best of the best riding roads on the trip in no particular order (there's a lot). They all have a great flow of twisties and great surfaces:

- A-176 (Anso to Hecho)

- N-260 (Biescas to Broto - Puerto de Cotefablo)

- C-13 (Sort to Port de la Bonaigua)

- D934 (French north ramp of the Col du Pourtalet)

- A-1605 (val d'Isabena, Lascuarre to Bonansa)

- N-141 (Spanish east ramp of the Col du Portillon)

- C-13 (Cellers to Camarasa)

- LV-5118 (Peramola to Politg)

- B-400 (C-16 to Gosol)

- LV-4241 and C-462 (both Sant Llorenc to Solsona)

- C-26 (Solsona to Berga)

- BV/LV-4241 (Berga to Sant Llorenc)

- B-431 (Avinyo to Prats de Llucanes)

- BP-1101/3 (Manresa to Montserrat Abbey)

Most beautiful spot/views:

- Tuixent to Gosol valley road (C-563)

- Valley view from La Coma down to Sant Llorenc de Morunys (C-462)

ADAC maps are a great starting point (I bought a host of them from Mapsman years ago) but you can't beat recommendations and your own Google Maps Street View research.

I have a ride report with pics if anyone is interested.

Am planning on taking the whole Spanish thing a step further by doing a loop of the country (Santander/Valencia/Andalusia/Avila/Santander. Have routes in Basecamp if

Excellent roads, as you say the N-260 is handy for getting from one end of the Pyrenees to other quickly but apart form a few sections the routes you list are far, far better IMHO.

The other day I added the LV-4011 from Cambrils - not the Cambrils coastal resort! - to Solsona, amazing scenery!

It looks like we're having another lockdown, with controls over traveling between regions and provinces, so I'll have my bit of the Pyrenees all to myself - life's so hard! :)

Enjoy!

Davidstonstuff and Simon 100.

Thank you both. I will have a go at cutting the roads you mention into BaseCamp, then sharing the file on here.

Davidstonuff, it woukd be great to see your ride report and pictures. I’d certainly be interested in seeing your loop of Spain. I have done a similar loop of France (several times) and a full loop of Germany, once. I can’t PM you as you are not a site subscriber, which costs just £12 a year.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the tip. I was aware of the L-4011 but couldn’t fit it in in the time I had. I opted instead for the direct route to Sant Llorence via the L-401 which was fantastic. I’ll add the L-4011 to my list for next time. It looks like you could get really remote which I love.

If you’re in Tremp then you’ve hit the absolute motorcycling jackpot. Smack bang in the middle of the lot. And the X-Country Challenge (or X-Challenge?) in your pics doubles your fun as I see from your other stuff you have going on that you spend a lot of time off road now. I’m extremely jealous. I wish I’d known you were there, we could have done a little ride out. You could have saved me getting lost at the Mirador del Pirineu just north of Ager :). What a great place. And it's not just the roads, the countryside (as we call it) is beautiful. Maybe next time.

The N-260, although a back-bone, really is a great road and I shouldn’t undersell it. I think there was only 1 stretch that 1 would say was unenjoyable, the short run between Campo and Castejon de Sos. When I was there it was bumpy (they were fixing that), very busy and tight. After Castejon it was great again, particularly the section right after it up and over the Port de la Creu de Perves.

I’ve updated my list to include the following:
A-139 (Santaliestra to Bonansa)
HU-V-9601 (Campo to the A-1605)
N-230 ( N-260 to Embalse de Caserca just before the Vielha tunnel)
N-260 (El Pont de Suert to Senterada over the Port de la Creu de Perves)
N-260 (Sort to Adrall over the Puerto del Canto)
BV-4031 (Collada de Toses to La Pobla de Lillet via Castellar de n'Hug)

Can't believe I didn't put the N-260 from Urtx down to Ribes de Freser over the Collada de Toses but the truth is I kept getting wet and the surface was only a 4 out of 5 :) so my recollection was clouded in misery :). I'll include it now though. If they ever get round to re-surfacing that run (it's nowhere near as bad as this may read) it would would have to be the greatest sport riding road in Europe.

Feel free to add any other gems you know of.
Rgds

Hi Richard,
I think I could afford that. Let me take a look. There's so much good stuff in this section alone it's great value.

Happy to share the RR. I just need to update my list of roads then I'll send it over.

I'll look at sending the files through for the Spain trip. I'm no whizz with Basecamp so will look at a way of getting the route files to you (any tips?).

Be with you soon.

Rgds,
Steve

Steve,

When you have raided the piggy bank and subscribed, PM me your email address, please. We can then sort out the best way to move the BaseCamp files around. Probably the easiest way is to attach the file (or files) in an email to me, just like attaching an Excel or Word document file.

Richard
