If you are going to ride the route we did over the last 3 years in Morocco you will note cope on a GSA off road.
Hence buying a bike suitable for the terrain. I thought I was buying a 690 until the earlier comments about max 600.

Keep up, I think you can have the fastest and all the kit on it but if you can't ride it doesn't really mater if u are on a 50cc,
Take a map and a compass so if it's to much u can do your own thing, like me,,,or me and you can be at the back
A 690 would be fine for you Joe .... as long as it's sorted for reliabilty
I think if Mark and I run it again in 2018 we'll throw in a few different routes from the past 3 yrs for a bit of change, perhaps some of my old favourites and even some new ones
As an alternative to KTM it might be worth looking at a Honda CBX500 with Rally Raid kit on it John. I would imagine that would also do for your other planned trips and would also work well for getting about in that there London!
Top stuff for going back Mark, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. I would love to have another go at the trails we did, but want to get some more off road skills and experience before a revisit in the hope I'll spend more time upright next time
Looking forward to your trip report in 2017
Hadn't considered Honda and not daft enough to ask what's wrong with KTM!
London is for my other toys not an off-road bike !
Buttonmoon are you not taking your 690 ?
I'm in mark, I'll see if the misses like to come along if that's ok
Did Angie want to come?
Ay!! Is there something I should know?
I may take my xt600 and Angie ride the wk400
