If you are going to ride the route we did over the last 3 years in Morocco you will note cope on a GSA off road.

Hence buying a bike suitable for the terrain. I thought I was buying a 690 until the earlier comments about max 600.

A 690 would be fine for you Joe .... as long as it's sorted for reliabilty :thumb

I think if Mark and I run it again in 2018 we'll throw in a few different routes from the past 3 yrs for a bit of change, perhaps some of my old favourites and even some new ones :beerjug:

Keep up, I think you can have the fastest and all the kit on it but if you can't ride it doesn't really mater if u are on a 50cc,
Take a map and a compass so if it's to much u can do your own thing, like me,,,or me and you can be at the back

Always do...

Compass and map for electronics failure,
Wristwatch for navigation by night ( yes, really) and confidence to leave the group when it's appropriate !!

Thanks Tim, I'd follow you anywhere ( well, until the restraint order kicked in).

Mark buttonmoon stipulated max 600 hence my questions. I don't mind buying bike and giving it to someone to prep it but I'm asking for guidance on which bike to buy for the trip.

I may be doing a tour in Kazakhstan or Iran if I can get permission so a bike that is robust and can deal with crappy roads is important. Minimal electronics, easy to service, etc

As an alternative to KTM it might be worth looking at a Honda CBX500 with Rally Raid kit on it John. I would imagine that would also do for your other planned trips and would also work well for getting about in that there London!

Top stuff for going back Mark, I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. I would love to have another go at the trails we did, but want to get some more off road skills and experience before a revisit in the hope I'll spend more time upright next time :D

Looking forward to your trip report in 2017 :beerjug:

Hadn't considered Honda and not daft enough to ask what's wrong with KTM!

London is for my other toys not an off-road bike !

Nothing wrong with a KTM, just good to have options :beerjug:
I met a nice Irish man on a rally raid CBX recently who was off on a bit of a tour and was making his way down to Morocco and beyond. I thought his bike looked just the job for a spot of long distance off roading :thumb2

This is the wifes bike cbx500, as it is at the moment, we are looking at tyres for next year, she's not fancying the rally upgrade yet.

Great bike if you fancy taking it to the next level

This is the bike I will use, it's a wk400 trail, only thing I will be changing is some enduro tyres and mousses, But for under £2000 new I won't be that bothered if I scrap it,,,,
It's got a tank range of 250 miles, with a air cooled engine

Dates

Hi dates are as follows:

We will get the 8am ferry from Algeciras to Tan Med, Morocco on Monday 3rd April 2017 we will get the return ferry at 4pm on Thursday 13th April. You must book this yourself on line currently £57.37

Your bike needs to be in Essex (CM3) before 30th March, as that day Paul and I will spend most of the day loading the van. You can bring your bike anytime before that date and I will store it locked in one of my factory units, it is secure but please supply a chain so I can lock them together, you'll need a chain for the one night in Spain before catch the ferry anyway.

You need to arrive at Algeciras on or before 2nd April, I have arranged a hotel near the port, we will stay there one night before we go and one night when we return, this will come out of the money you give me. If you plan to arrive early or stay longer let me know and I'll change the reservation. we are allowed to leave the van at the hotel.
