just downloaded the free basecamp of garmin to my pc and was suprised that it seems very basic to say the least ,trying to plan a route and on the map its just straight lines ,no details even when i zoom right in .

You need to plug in your device to view & use its maps or alternatively download your maps to your PC using Garmin Express & choose your maps from the toolbar map option. You are only seeing Garmins base map at the moment.
