I am currently in the process of registering my Spanish reg GS onto a UK number, but it's a slow process. BMW take up to 4 weeks to supply a certificate of conformity, thereby holding everything up. My insurance runs out in a few days but most companies won't offer cover without a UK registration number. The only one that did said they would cancel at my expense after 4 weeks if I hadn't got the UK reg.

Does anyone know of a company that does offer insurance on a VIN or foreign number to save me phoning all the insurers on mcn compare. Cheers.

Most "can" insure on a VIN, I think insurers are restricted to how long they can issue cover on a vin.

Maybe they "can", but from my phone calls, most won't. Does anyone know someone who "will"?

Insure on the VIN, not the foreign reg. Have you tried Bikesure ( Adrian Flux) ?? Their specialist dept should be able to help.

That's because most frontline staff are monkeys paid peanuts. If it isn't standard stuff they're flummoxed.

Adrian Flux, Footman James, Peter Best are well known brokers who could be worth a try.

I've had at least 3 bikes insured on the VIN number (prior to recieving a UK regd nos.) can't see why it would be a problem

Yup. I've done a couple. Never had an issue. Seem to recall I used Carol Nash.

Thanks for the suggestions. I phoned several yesterday and only one would even consider it and, as I said, only for 4 weeks. I'll give the suggested ones a call this week.

If you ring Carole Nash and get no joy ask to speak to one of the supervisors as they tend to know how to deal with the stuff that everyone else files under 'too difficult'

Imported a bike from Ireland. Insured with Peter James on vin. Called them when dvla sent the new registration. Changed and new docs sent foc.

Talk to someone beyond the chimp that answers the phone in the call centre. Relative to the number of vehicles on the road, few people import vehicles, as a consequence the chimps are not required to be trained on which button to press if and when an enquiry comes in. Also try the lots of brokers that advertise their trade in the pages of the MCN and other publications. One or more of them will help you.

A friend insured his Nepalese registered Enfield, whose number plate was nothing more than squiggles, the log book the same. The insurer (Axa) used the first six or so numbers off the engine or the frame, I forget which.

Tried the suggested ones. Maximum 30 days only. Would be longer for a classic bike. It'll have to be uninsured for a while, secured in my garage until I get the Certificate of Conformity and can complete the process

Will none of the above give you a theft only policy on the bike on its vin number that could then be upgraded to the level of cover you require when the bike is registered , only fly in the ointment would be that it would have to be trailered for an MOT but thats about it

Think they refer to it as LAID UP INSURANCE

I think that insurer's are only allowed, by law, to offer maximum of 30 days cover on a Vin plate. Hopefully, it can all be resolved in that timescale.

I didn't ask about laid up insurance, mainly because I've never heard of it.

I asked a couple of insurers if 30 days was law or policy, and apparently it's policy. It could be longer on a classic bike.

you dont even need an index number to insure for keeping it in the garage, got mine covered for 25 for the year

Carol Nash. I have other bikes wit them and added my probject bike. It's a policy I have only had about 3 months

Just covered my Bonnie with Peter Best, 30 days, happy to extend if DVLA are tardy.

Interesting one this, when we imported a secondhand motorhome from Germany we bought some temporary number plates from the dealer that included third party insurance to take it anywhere in Europe, simples as they say. We endeavoured without success to obtain comprehensive cover from U K insurers for the trip home from Dover, they either would not insure road risks on the Vin, or required a current UK mot.
