Long and short of it is it doesnt matter how nice it looks or how few miles its done if it hasnt been looked after properly its going to cost you hope that helps you trickytree

I hope I'm no grammar Nazi...but f-all punctuation and f-all capitalisation means you end up making f-all sense! I'm with tricky on this one...sorry.

im also of the agreement that no punctuation or word coordination ends up being very hard to decifer so who did the box for you in order to cost that much it must have been very badly abused plus you were ripped off as that's way to much to pay for a box
:p

I agree with all of the statements so far on the subject of the original post. However, those who live in glasshouses should not throw stones. The word you are looking for is decipher.

On what little I could comprehend the subject in the original post, the matter of oil changes came to light. Why changing the oil in the gearbox should affect it's potential lifespan is beyond me. Car gearboxes and rear ends do not have their oil changed in their lifetime. Motorcycles are very little different. My 2005 1200 has over 50k on it, and has never had the oil changed in either, never mind checked. There are no drips below it, so the oil is still in there.
To my mind potential failures are caused by 3 things:
1: Manufacturer's assembly tolerances being incorrect. E.G. BMW rear hubs. If you have a bad one, no number of oil changes are going to make it into a good one. I have a good one, so I leave it alone.
2: Defective components: E.G. a bearing. As before, oil changes will not extend it's life.
3: Owner abuse. The most probable cause of the failure in this thread. Oil changes won't help this either.
Myke

I agree with Myke on this one, Bought a Fireblade a few years ago, full Honda history, 16K miles on the clock and it was mint! I had it for 3 months and the gearbox went so took it back to the dealer and was told the exact same thing...bad luck is all it is.

Bought my 1150 with 3000 miles on the clock and put a further 40 odd thousand on the clock , in that time it was comprehensively over serviced using genuine filters and the best quality oils :-

Yearly oil and filter , gearbox and final drive oil , brake fluid ,tappets every 2 years yet at 5 years old (21,000 miles) after x3 final drive bearing failures ( 1 rebuild by an independant specialist and 2 by BMW dealers ) it needed a new bevel box to cure the problem (chains and sprockets were never this expensive).

Sold the bike in immaculate condition with 45,000 on the clock , next owner had it for over a year before selling it on (after another service) and despite this less than 3 months later it blew its gearbox to bits with the mainshaft bearing punching a hole in the casing .

A case of sh*t happens , unfortunately when it is with a BMW it tends to be expensive
