Apparently a special tool is required to undo the front axle - my Haynes book of lies says a 22mm hex, but I have such a thing and it doesn't fit.

Is there something else to use to undo it? I want to replace my wheel bearings...

Seem to recall that the one I bought for the 1200 was a tight/interference fit....

It wasn't after deft application of a file (to the tool, not the spindle)

You don't need a hex bit just drift it out after loosening the spindle bolts...easy

What about the tork bit to unlock the front Torx securing bolt
As well as the Allen key to unwind the spindle b4 you drift it out...

Yep you need torque socket to loosen the spindle bolts as stated however no Allen key required. Just drift out from opposite side. Works for me and others I know.

My 13 reg 700
Has the Torx screw at the front & you need an Allen key to unwind the spindle out, did it yesterday day to have new tyres fitted

If you look at the pictures you will see the threaded bit on the end of the spindle.

Unless you undo the Torx bolt at the front & use an Allen key to unwind the spindle it will not come out.

Last picture of old & new Avon Trailrider fitted..

Ah! Mines an 09 800gs and has a completely different lower fork and front spindle set up. 2 torque bolts to hold spindle and spindle not threaded. I assumed op was referring to pre 2013 bike

Much easier with yours as BMW don't give you an Allen Key, just the Torx bit. So another fing to try a store as no room under the seat & the OEM Tool kit ain't worth a dime
( more cost cutting )

I have successfully removed and refitted the front wheel a number of times now - thanks all. I have been drifting the axle out very successfully. The wheel bearings and seals have been replaces, as have the steering head bearings. Refitting it all today.
