We pulled into the New Inn a few weeks ago at around 2.10 and it was closed for lunch - we were directed to the Clapham cafe/bar/bunkhouse. What an excellent quirky little place.

Stay in the hotel but socialise in the cafe

I'll check out the cafe - we have booked the hotel for a few days at the end of July, so we can explore the dales

Got right royally screwed by them about 6 years ago. I used to have some shooting on the moors up there and used them for lunches and post shoot drinks. We decided to stay over on one occasion and as regulars asked for a special rate for 9 rooms and a significant discount was agreed over the phone. On the day the discount was denied ever having been offered and despite me knowing fine well it was the owner/manageress I had spoken to she denied it all saying they never discount etc etc. They had also let a couple of the rooms I had booked so a couple of us had to share. I could see in their bookings book where they had crossed out my booking for 9 and "corrected" it to 7. The meal that night was shite too.

However it is a nice place that was being done up room by room so probably a lot different to the last time I stayed. I would recommend the Brookhouse Guest House as an alternative. We used them for breakfast for years. The Game Cock in nearby Austwick is worth considering too, and worth going to for a meal - french chef and brilliant grub at very reasonable prices. Next best pub would be the Marton Arms, Thornton in Lonsdale. Food is ok, rooms nice, the best bit is the whisky bar though.

What are your plans while up there. If you are walking on the moors I used to shoot over the moorland around Crummackdale to the North East of Clapham and know it like the back of my hand, so can suggest some interesting things to look out for if you like, although tbh its hard to go wrong up there.

    Have a great trip
