Navigator VI and Garmin Virb XE Camera

Just ordered a Virb XE Auto Racing Bundle which comes with a OBD2 adapter that looks like a rebadged Scantool MX :)

I really want two of the rugged 10M cables but they are so expensive. $75 AUD for one here and the whole camera bundle with the extra mount and OBD2 scantool is only costing me $380

Very good.

Don't forget to post some video's here of what you get up to :)

Out in the RAIN today. Started Sunny and Dry. Typical.

Some shots of the lads with their Hex EzCan and auxiliary lights as well.

Was out in Heavy Rain again yesterday and had an issue with my Rear Virb X.

Moisture had gathered inside the camera body and covered the lens badly.

The Front Virb XE Camera was completely unaffected (as the night before I had baked the Desiccant Tabs at 80 degrees, so they were both ready to use).

As I got this rear camera second hand, I suspect the door frame seal has gone, as it's letting in too much water. New door kit is around £45

But the front camera (which gets the most abuse) was fine. :thumb2

All Rugged Power Cables are working fine in the heavy rain also. All good.

Shopping List

Ok, I've been asked by Private Message if I can build a shopping list of everything you'll need for this project, with URL Links.

So no problem, here it is.

Starting Kit

I'm not going to make any assumptions here, so for starters you will need at least the basic stuff

Motorcycle - erm.... Well it is sort of relevant. You can only use the OBD2 Port on Euro4 Compliant Motorcycles (Late 2016 and 2017 models). the camera's and everything will obviously work on older bikes, it's just the OBD2 Data ports are only available on the later models for telemetry overlay. If you have an older bike you'll need to do some research on compatible cables etc to get your OBD2 data out of the bike.

Computer - You'll need a fairly modern computer with at least 4GB RAM to process the video footage, fast USB port to download your camera footage. Or it'll all be dog slow when trying to make your videos.

Broadband - You'll need a fairly modern broadband connection with a good UPLOAD speed, Or you won't be able to easily share your video with the outside world. My Broadband is 200mbps Download and 20mbps Upload so it's fairly fast.

YouTube - You'll need an account with YouTube or other social media online account to play your videos online. If you're not bothered about broadcasting your footage and only want it for home use, you won't need YouTube. Your Garmin Virb Edit Software will do all this for you.

Software - You'll need Video Editing Software to render your camera footage. I use Garmin Virb Edit Software as its free and compatible with your Garmin Camera footage. Download it here....

http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/virb-edit

Ok, so once you've got that lot sorted out, here's your buying list. I'll put up some URL links, but for the very best prices I'd recommend you do your own searching.

Camera's - Garmin Virb XE and X are now discontinued (2017) so, as far as I know you can't buy them anymore direct from Garmin UK. You'll need to buy them online from any retailers who have some still in stock, or second hand off ebay. Prices will vary with old stock sell-offs and bid to win.

Desiccant Tabs - Although you will get these in the Camera's, you may want a couple spare. These are Tabs that sit inside the camera body and absorb moisture. This helps keep the lens clear. ebay item 292114936298. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GARMIN-VI...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Front Camera Mount - ebay Item 132019095125 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sports-Ca...095125?hash=item1ebcf38655:g:FL0AAOSw2xRYPmMv

Rear Camera Mount - ebay Item 252881754394 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Right-Sid...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Garmin Rugged 10M Power Cables - You don't need these unless you want to power the camera's from the bike. The camera's will have internal batteries but will only last about 1.5 hours maximum. So you will need one of these cables for each bike mounted camera if you want all day use. They come in 10 metre lengths so you'll have to cut them down to size and re-build them to the right length. I'd recommend soldering them back together so that you don't suffer bad connections in the future. Garmin UK https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/p/543204

Memory Cards - Your cameras will need memory cards, I chose 128GB storage (which is the maximum) and will give you at least 10 hours of continuous footage. Amazon.co.uk SanDisk Extreme 128GB microSDXC Memory Card + SD Adapter up to 100MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30 A1 https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XX3X9JD/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

USB Upload Device - You will need this device to quickly attach your Camera Video Cards and upload data onto your computer USB Port. The USB Wires that come with your camera will also do the job but very slowly. This device speeds up the data transfer a lot. Amazon.co.uk Kingston MobileLite G4 USB 3.0 Multi Card Reader - Black, Grey https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KX4TORI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

LUJII Mini OBD2 ELM327 V1.5 Bluetooth Car Scanner - You will need this to connect to your 2017+ model year OBD Port. This allows you to upload data from your bike onto the video footage. Important Note: This OBD2 Scanner will be continuously drawing power from your bike, do not leave it plugged in or you risk it draining your battery. If you have an older bike which is not Euro4 compliant you will need to do more research on compatible connectors and cables and this OBD Connector will not work. Amazon.co.uk https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00UR5BRZU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

OBD2 Extension Cable - You may want this extension cable to reposition your OBD2 Bluetooth Reader under the seat (as I did). It then makes it very easy to uplug your OBD2 Scanner when you need to. ebay Item 201884685299. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OBDII-OBD...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

External Storage - You will need external storage for all the video footage you gather. It'll eat up your Computer Hard Drive very quickly. I chose 5 Terabyte External Hard Drive which will give you around 20 days of 10 hours on two camera's at full HD. So it's a lot. Amazon.co.uk Seagate Expansion 5 TB USB 3.0 Desktop 3.5 inch External Hard Drive for PC https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00UNA1O0W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Bluetooth Headsets - You may want headsets to communicate with your Pillion Rider and overlay voice data to your cameras. I chose Scala Rider Packtalk Duo - ebay Item 161995985846. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Cardo...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

BMW Navigator VI Sat Nav - You may want to connect your camera's to the BMW Navigator VI for remote control usage. I'd recommend you speak with your BMW Dealer about this.

Power Connectivity and Control - You can just connect your Rugged 10M Cables direct to the bikes battery, but I wanted more control so connected mine to the HEX EzCan Power Controller. There are no current UK or European Distributors for this device and I had to import it from the USA. I'd recommend you search on this forum for up to date information on this device (if you want it).

Great write up Warlord but I didn't want to quote your whole post.

The Scantool LX will not drain your battery and should be compatible http://www.obdlink.com/lxbt/ I just bought the Garmin auto raving bundle which has a OBD2 tool in the bundle which looks like a rebadged Scantool MX http://www.obdlink.com/mxbt/

I will confirm when they turn up.

Also bought a Virb X last night for a bargain price off Ebay.

I wish it would move up, or even better have its own screen like the media player has.

Its a nuisance and I also dont know how to move the app icon.

I've email Garmin about the app location, not expecting anything positive in return.

My Virb XE Auto Racing Bundle turned up with the OBD2 scantool. I did a small video with the bike running for 20 seconds but could not see any bike G-Metrix data.

Will have to spend some more time on it tomorrow

Well I've tried to get OBD2 data on my S1000R with the Garmin supplied OBDLink MX adapter and my other OBDLink MX adapter but nothing. Perhaps it only works on the newer bikes with the standard OBD2 connector

Col d'izoard

Just back from France, first video upload of what must be the best Col on the RDGA. Enjoy!
