R80 G/S Paris Dakar 1987 - opinions required

Feck me £18k,

It's not even minty original,

It was only original once,

That's a lot of mulla for a tarted up old airhead,

My POS (I mean patinered original masterpiece) must be worth a fortune

:D

the advert says it was sourced by Gary, so you should speak to him.
He had a cheaper bike on his site that he has rebuilt, rather than this refreshed one.
The one pictured looks tidy , however is not totally original though is it with round rocker covers.
I think the paralever windshield could be bought in 87 so could be seen as a period extra .
It does seem too expensive at the moment for 18450.

BaMW have a PD with original gaston signature at £16k. They also have a restored basic original series gs up for a lot less - and imho looks much nicer than the pd......and as the people who have them say, its far nicer to ride

I don't think the one I posted about was sourced by Gary, at least if it was it's not in the info I have. It's £18k, not £18450. I've looked on the BaMW site, don't see an original Gaston signed one on there. The one I posted about is being sold as a restored, original G/S PD.

Hi Berin, in that case be Careful

check the ad you found and I this advert : http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C854226:rob

A superb matching numbers example of this iconic motorcycle which would grace any collection. Ready to ride or simply stare at as you choose!

Refreshed to exact original ex-factory condition in Germany by respected classic BMW specialists Siebenrock, using many genuine new parts down to the correct specification tyres (parts receipts available). The quality is exceptional (only the panniers are not as new).

The bike was imported to the UK in 2015 and first registered in the UK in 2016. It is fitted with a UK spec milometer which reads 3 miles and has been stored in showroom conditions. The engine has been periodically run and brought up to temperature, it naturally starts on the button and happily settles into an idle.

The bike was sourced by BMW specialist Gary Burton of BAMW. Gary builds the very best examples of R80's to order and unsurprisingly has a very long waiting list. Here's your chance to jump the queue!

This bike kick started the adventure genre; the godfather to the ever popular BMW GS and in rare Paris Dakar guise enjoyed competition success - qualities that can only make future values go in one direction. Unlike its peer RC30's and 916's prices are still sensible!

I purchased the bike with the plan of undertaking a RTW tour on a classic bike, but my plans have since changed. It really needs to be enjoyed for the purpose it was designed for.

£18450 he's off his rocker and a peer to a 916 or RC30?
I don't think so, a R80G/S PD has limited appeal and not mainstream like a sports bike mentioned

Thanks Colt, that's the one! I found the one with Gaston's ink signature, on Gary's site. I read this as being £16k including the recommissioning needed.

So I guess the provenance of the £18k one is that it was restored by siebenrock, brought in by Gary, bought by our man and is now being sold on with a mark up.

Think I'll call him to chat about the 2 basics he has.

Might need to shift some bikes...anyone want a S1000R Sport or a low chassis F800Gs, both mint?

Before you sell them it would be an idea to try an airhead out. They are pretty awful and an acquired taste. The 800cc engine will barely pull the skin off a rice pudding.

Hi Mate long time no see, could be something to do with me living 11,000 miles away now:D
I have recently bought a lovely R100 GSPD down here in Australia and love it, I am sure you will enjoy any airhead GS great to work on and great to ride, GO FOR IT
Cheers Jim

Thanks for the tip Rob, I've never ridden an airhead, which I should if I can find someone to let me have a go, but in any case I was thinking that there may be some performance mods that can be done. Mrs Berin and I do a lot of trips with a mix of road and trails, on newer adventure bikes but we're thinking of 2 airheads to keep, in which case I might look at a 100 and Mrs Berin the 80.

Hello Jim, you lucky bugger! Looks like you got in before the Aussies pulled up the drawbridge!

Classic bluff from an airheader - he's just trying to stop all the airheads being snapped up :D

I use a PD g/s as a daily bike, winter, summer, short trip, long trip, whatever - yeah its had a few mods but is nowhere near as bad as you might be led to believe - like any bike you just need to dial into it.....and in the real world you can use its power more of the time as opposed to being able to use a high powered bikes power virtually none of the time. And despite dire warnings about monolever handling, you will find that actually handle pretty well too......

Well all I can say is that I bought an 1989 80 GS last year and absolutely love it It is my favourite bike and that even includes my 76 R 90 S
What I had to get used to was remembering motorcycling from 25 to 40 years ago when things didn't stop very well and didn't have an amazing performance, but the grin factor is right out there. I only paid 2.5 K for mine but it is 100,000 mile bike and quite rough cosmetically but mechanically sweet. When I finish restoring the current bike I'm working on it will be stripped down and brought back to original spec and colour during the course of next year. I am also thinking about selling my watercooled 1200 RT and buying an early GS has regular transport!!!!
These are lovely bikes and it's a shame I didn't discover them earlier, good luck with your purchase

I forgot to add on my post above - this is my bike of choice, I have had all (and I mean all - I was prolific in purchasing shall we say) the bikes that BMW made at one time or the other (at huge expense) and I sold my 2009 1200 GSA, 2011 K1300s and 2009 HP2 sport (my most recent bikes) and kept my 1984 r80 g/s PD version as its the one I most preferred out of all of them.

And you know what - if you buy it and dont like it, you can sell it on - you might even make a few quid. Go for it! :thumb2

Bought an R80GS square headlight type last year, bit rough cosmetically, but cheap enough as a taster, as Rob says, they are a bit agricultural, but I got attached to it. It's used regularly enough for local 100 - 150 mile round day trips. I use a twincam 1200 for longer trips.
The airhead will stay for a long while!! 'nough said.

One was sold at the bonhams auction yesterday, went for over 14k!
