Can anyone identify this bike?

A mate of mine is trying to identify this bike that his grandad owned, with a view to buying one, but no one I know can work out what it is.

Just wondered if anyone on here could help?

My first thoughts were BSA but the pushrod tower is wrong so possibly a Triumph or Aerial 500cc pre war (37/38 ish) I need to get my books out:rolleyes:
 
Well try a 1938 p50 Coventry Eagle
page 59 of Roy bacon " british bikes of the 30s"

The megaphone exhaust,rear tool box , timing cover, tank shape and push rood towers look the job
it's a Matchless 497cc engine:thumb

Very Rare today :augie

Ironically my friend had actually contacted that website and they couldn't find a match. UKGSER wins!
