1982 F2 Z650 Project

Engine

Picked up the Engine which I am very pleased with. I now have almost everything done, just waiting to get my wheels back, so a little holiday now with the wife and then on my return the rebuild will start. Engine in the frame and then build around that. Quite looking forward to it and fingers crossed we wont come across to many problems. Hopefully I will MOT it in April and ride on those beautiful Summer days now and again to put it back where it belongs. On the road:beerjug:

That looks great. Kawasaki would have done it like that if they thought we'd pay the price. Looks like you're headed for a better-than-factory finish, not too difficult though if I remember rightly.

Rebuid Begins

Well after a sunny break back in the garage and pottering. Engine is back in the frame which went well. Did it the easy way and laid the engine on its side and placed the frame over it. Fitted a couple of the mounting bolts and up on the bench she went to finish the job.:D
So I will now just potter away and hopefully she will be a rolling chassis in no time. That's once I get my wheels back from the sprayer who lets just say is beginning to pee me off slightly.

PLEASE VACUUM those inlet and exhaust ports out and stuff them with rolled up kitchen roll or clean rags or tape them off with moisture resistant masking tape. ASAP

Its SOOOOOO easy to get dust / dirt / grit in there, Every engine I build is closed up once the heads are fitted and the ports are not opened until I am fitting the exhaust or carbs

Good Luck the Build it looks great :thumb

Pardon the OCD of the open ports but I was unlucky once with an engine build and a small stone which scored the bore :blast it will never happen again :rob

That's bike painters for ya ....... reet pain in the arse! :D

Well not done much with the restoration of late but hoping that is going to change over the winter with time on my hands:thumb

But finally picked the wheels up today so other than a few nuts and bolts currently being zinc plated it's all back in the garage and ready to be put together:D So hopefully will be all sorted and ready to MOT by the spring:beerjug:

This is looking lovely! It has come a long way from the bike that left here! Would love to come and have a look when all finished!

Your more than welcome Dan. It will hopefully roll out of the garage tomorrow as I have been pottering and have the front wheel all sorted and hopefully the back on tomorrow. That's if I can get away from Moto GP :beerjug:

She is rolling

OK

I have had a productive weekend and now have a rolling chassis :thumb:thumb. I'm well on target to have this up and running by April 2018 which would be just over 1yr from taking delivery of a good base Z650 to work with:beerjug:

Wow. Really very nice indeed. Good work!

Near but yet so far

Had a little bit of a mixed weekend pottering on the Z650 project. Managed to fit a nice shinny new chain. Re-fit the clutch cable but then on refilling the braking system (Front only) with fluid I noticed the master cylinder piston was leaking which was a blow as its been overhauled with a new piston and seals. So not sure what's gone on there:blast:blast

Then I tried to put the original exhaust system back on. Feck it's difficult. You need about eight pairs on hands:nenau:nenau Each down pipe has two collets that push against the exhaust gasket in the block which get held by the downpipe collar clamp. To say it's difficult is an understatement:rob

I've asked on the Zed forum for any tips so here's hoping someone will tell me an easy way of doing what I thought would be an easy task

In the past I have used clear silicone sealer (ie for bathrooms etc) to "tack" the collets in place - although not on this actual type of bike, so dont know if that applies.......

Outstanding...top job done there!!

OK just a quick update. Things are progressing nicely with electrics and the exhaust now on. Brake master cylinder sorted by replacing the "O" ring that unfortunately had been pinched on reassembly leading to the leak. So hopefully very shortly we will have a running bike and I will post up some pics of it all done and ready for it's MOT:beerjug:

Lusted after

In the 80's a few of us at work had bikes. Micky had the z650 it always looked good and sounded mean. It looked a proper bike against my Honda Cb250r.

That is easily the best z650 I've seen. Congratulations.
