Pal of mine has a GSA it is 19 months old and on a PCP to which he put in £7K

The bike has done just over 6000 miles none of which have been over the winter, salty months.

The bike has a fair bit of rust in various areas of the frame and also various areas of the Engine. Sorry I have no pictures.

His supplying and servicing dealer has, after talking to higher up BMW, offered to replace the frame and the Engine ??....

My pal isnt too happy about that as he sees it the same as i do ( to a certain degree) that that is almost a new bike and it wont be the one he bought rather it will be a frankenstein of a thing

What do the massif think would be his best options ???

This is a wind up, I assume?

However if it isn't - then take the dealers offer.

No it isnt a wind up !! but clearly a joke

He bought into BMW believing it to be a quality product ( the Idiot) He is rightly cross about the situation

A new frame and new engine FFS but of course it doesn't happen does it in the perfect GS world

I think the least they (BMW) could do is a a very preferential trade up to a new bike

I got my bike replaced in full because i needed a new gearbox, which meant pulling the engine etc. But that was 2 weeks into ownership on a brand new bike. I think 19 months and 6000 miles is a bit to far into it to reject the bike. My dealer is still not playing ball about replacing my corroded wheels, frame, swing arm, so i'd tell your mate to bit their hands off!.

I agree about the preferential upgrade to a new bike, but it's probably cost. He could enquire about an upgrade deal but if they save money on the frame/engine deal that's what they will go for.

I agree entirely about the problems in trying to reject the bike at this stage otherwise thats what i would be telling him to do. it just does not seem that a new engine and frame is quite enough ....

It will also look terrible on the V5 will it not ?

They've offered to replace the bits that have corroded FOC under the corrosion warranty. Seriously what else was he expecting?
The V5 should be updated to show the new engine number so won't look bad at all.

This whole corrosion thing is weird as I have never had severe corrosion on a 1200GS - I have had 4 of them since 2005 and ridden them all through Winter. It's very strange that the quality is so variable for a mass produced product.

I had a new engine in my 14my GSA

My dealer gave me the paperwork to update my V5C with DVLA but to date I haven't bothered

Should I be worried?

That would appear to be it, in a nutshell.

But - nothing to stop him asking about any other options which the dealer may be willing to consider.

Prob doesn't take the trained mechanics long to swap those items out? Ask to have the frame left with him for a week - and get it painted properly prior to fitting?

It would probably be better if they put the engine in the bike, instead.:aidan

And yes, ask the dealer for a preferential deal on a new bike; that's what I've done in the past. They charged around 15p per mile covered, but that was back in 2013.

When I went through this process I asked if I could get a discount if I exchanged bikes.
BMW came back with a discount of £2,000 of any bike in the dealers showroom................. Which I took.

Sounds like your best option if they'll go for it

If not, take the new frame and engine then just hand the bike back at the end of the PCP contract, resale value is not your problem as it is pre determined

I wouldn't be surprised if dealers don't push for the replacement parts. Whilst it's under warranty the cost to put it right is a different pot of money, ie a warranty claim. Once it's handed back the warranty will most likely have run out and the dealer is stuck with a shabby looking bike that will be hard to shift. This will result in your mate probably getting no equity in the bike leaving him with another £7K deposit to find assuming he wants to go for another.
Personally I'd go for the new parts. What does it matter if the V5 shows a new engine etc? It'll be on BMW's computer showing it was all carried out at the dealer so who's bothered? Anyway as a PCP bike why should your mate be bothered about anything other than the bike's trade-in value and whether it has equity or not?

Would you want a bike thats been put together by a dealer.

From the frame up?
