Hi Fellas, I am going to France for the first time with the GS and the wife as pillion. Have you any recomendations for places to visit for this trip I wouldlike to stay with in a 250 mile radius of Roscoff.

Bayeaux tapestry & cathedral

More WWII things than you can point a stick at, include Pegasus Bridge, St Marie Eglise

For those keen to assist the OP (welcome by the way) a 250 mile radius from Roscoff, embraces a half circle of roughly:

Pornic on the Atlantic coast, due south

Saumur, east south east

Le Mans, near enough east

Caen, on the coast

Salcombe, due north but lots of water in the way!

In short, it's a huge area.

OP, can you tell the audience, please:

1. If you have a map

2. How long you have got from the moment you arrive in Roscoff to the moment you have to finish your holiday, I assume back in Roscoff but if not, where?

3. A really good idea as to what sort of sights, sounds and smells excite you and the good lady. Be as graphic and descriptive as you like.

4. When this holiday is to be. If it's tomorrow, they'll need to get their skates on. If it's next year, they (and you) can take plenty of time

Don't try to do too much, get used to the roads, stop for coffee, lunch, tea/ice cream. Treat it as a learning curve. Next time get over the water and get a far south as you can.

Learn to love France/French, but go to the sun.

France gets better the further south you go......there are some good bits in the north, enjoy them but treat them as training for the warm bits.

We have been riding in France for several years, but last year we started in Spain and after a few days rode back North to Caen for the Portsmouth ferry home. The last two years have included some cold wet miserable days in France so this year it's Spain all week.

The riding experience in France is much better than over here, enjoy but try further south.

OP, depending on the answers to the questions posed in post #3, you might do worse than picking up two Michelin books:

Green Guide to Brittany

Green Guide to Normandy

Each book is well published, stuffed full of things to see, things to do and suggested touring roads to take. You'll get lots of recommendations in this thread to spend your time seeing the Normandy D-day landing sites *. These are all fine and dandy, unless you or - more importantly - your wife, think that it's all rather dull. We know nothing about you both from your solitary post, so give the fellows some help, please.

* It's a good job the allied forces chose Normandy for their landing ground or bikermates would never go there, as we are assured all the roads in the north of France are very dull and boring. It's not true, of course; they are just different to the Alps.

Nothing wrong with the north of France there are many places of interest and beauty, Normandy has more ww2 history than you can shake a stick at, and you have some wonderful picturesque villages in both Normandy and Brittany, roads in general are better and quieter than ours, whats not to like just take your time and enjoy your first trip and all being well you will want many more.

Thanks for all of your help we are going to treat it as a bit of a learning curve later in the year we hope to do Santander then back up.

WW2 sites are prob not high on the wifes list off things to do shes more cafe and scenery Im sure we will have a great time

Perhaps you like boats, but if not P to Sanander has got to be even worse than Roscoff.

Avoidng the WW11 sites you could visit Mont St. Michel, also Pornic and Saumur are nice. If you have time the Loire Chateaux a visit - Villandry, Azay le Rideau and Chenonceau.

Quimper is a lovely oldy worldly town with plenty of streets leading away from the cathedral with plenty of eating and shopping, easy parking.
The walled town of Concarneau is fabulous, if you catch it on a hot day. Parking is easy on the harbour side. Plenty of little shops and eating places.
I have a friend who lives an hour away from Roscoff and has a Gite that he rents, also secure parking and it's in the countryside, he has a 6 acre garden.

Paimpol is a lovely fishing port with marina and bars and restaurants
Binic as above
Saint Quay Portrieux
St Malo
Dinan
Dinard
Quiberon
Auray
Vannes
La trinite-sur-mer are all worth a visit.

Rennes and Nantes are very nice too

The D785 from Morlaix to Quimper is an awesome road however i didn't really like Quimper full of strange begging vagrants.:thumby:

See, bikermates, not everyone facies re-enacting Saving Ryan's privates, at every opportunity.

The Michelin books will be your friend, OP trust me. Those and a map.

+1 for quimper and concarneau, fabulous!
a bit further south you Vannes and its medieval centre, also the parc national de briere (second largest marais after the camargue) with lots ofm little towns and places to stay....

Mainly to annoy Wappers, but if its you first trip to France Google 'priorite a droite' and think about it all the time.
