Bike Security - Pragmasis Chain

I bought some black 10mm thick neoprene foam, which I cut into an oversized disc which now sits between the pin head washer and my wheel. So although you can't see anything in the picture, the 10mm neoprene foam is pressed against my wheel paintwork rather than the steel washer (washer also stops the wheel nuts being undone).

I know the chain should be off the ground (but I need to be able to move around the bike in the garage, if the ground anchor is nearer to the bike it becomes a trip hazard when moving the bike), and this is the last line of defence, so if they've got this far, lots of other things have failed or been breached (and I'll have some interesting conversations with some companies).

I had my 13mm Pragmasis chain unused, so I thought I'd wack that on as well. Doesn't take long and it'll just be a pain in the arse for anyone trying to move it (except me). :beerjug:

I wouldn't worry about that video. He's obviously a professional with time, experience and tools.

Joe Average won't do that.

Have you seen the videos on YouTube of that Professional Safe Cracker that got through a BANK VAULT safe... in front of the Bank Manager in a controlled test.

Nothing is safe. Just got to slow them down and insist on specialist skills and tools. 90% wont bother.

It'll stop Mr Drug User bricking in your window and stealing your bike.

It'll slow everyone else down.

... and, at the end of the day its better than doing NOTHING.

Ok, looking at my invoices.

For my mobile setup - Total Cost £ 138.70

1 x 13mm Noose Chain (2 Meters) £ 98.75
1 x RL21 Round-Lock £ 39.95

For my Garage & Driveway setup - Total Cost £ 369.90

1 x Torc Anchor, 1 x 19mm Chain (1.5 Meters), Squire SS65CS-XLN Lock (Package Deal) = £ 244.95
1 x Hardened Washer = £ 10
1 x 290mm Anti-Pinch Pin = £ 50
1 x Torc Anchor = £ 64.95

So the whole lot was about £ 500 in total for this part of the bike security setup.

There's a whole lot more in the background and this was by far the cheapest part.

Well who knows, but at least its transferable to other bikes I might own, unlike a lot of other kit that just ends up dead money.

Weird as it might sound, but you don't want your security to be impossible. If you genuinely lost your keys or something happened, a Professional Locksmith can still save the day without it costing £1000's or massive inconvenience to you and your family.
 
The weak link will still always be your routine and security discipline.

Not locking the garage door, leaving your security keys nearby or in the same room etc, owning a deaf dog, leaving windows open. The daft stuff. :D

If you were to go outside and review your security, think like a burglar. Could he kick in your door panels? Smash your windows? (are they secure, double glazed, laminate)

Are your locks standard or, Anti-Pick, Anti-Bump, Anti-Snap, Anti-Drill, PAS24, or TS007 high security? It costs nothing to buy bump keys off eBay which crack most standard uPVC doors and patio sliders

Once in, how easy is it to move around. If the alarm does sound, does anyone actually come to investigate (neighbours, security firms) how long does it take for them to respond?

Can they get access to your expensive stuff? Is it easy to grab and run? Is any CCTV footage of high enough quality? Do you have failover broadband/GSM 3G/4G or other independent alternatives for Security?

Then once you've done all that, turn it on its head. How easy is it to get out, in the event of a fire?

Then balance it all out.

All this stuff really.
 
All my bike security keys are on the same keyring. If I lose them it's access to the house, garage chains and disc lock. So I need to keep them well hidden especially when off on my holidays.

Good, just a bit of thinking is all thats needed to improve your security by 60% or more.

Stupid tip I learned years ago about internal door security. In addition to locks - just replace the hinge screws with bigger ones. Makes them far harder to break down. Cheap and effective.

I take mine on holiday but in fairness every holiday for the last 10 years has been on a bike.
My keys are always with me so if someone breaks in to the house they can't get my keys and the bike keys, van key and work keys come upstairs with me at bed time too.

Easy to fit, cheap as chips, passive to use, and solid as anything.
 
Forgot to mention. Lock all your tools up and dont give thieves an opportunity to use them to assist in the theft.

Turning up equipped and premeditated carries heavier criminal sentances than an opportunist's story. You make life easier for them if they can use your tools. Don't give them that excuse.

Don't leave them laying around, or hung up on an open wall out on display (man cave).

Make sure garden sheds have good locks and garden tools are locked up as well.

Just build up the security layers over time. Always keep it in mind.
 
Warlord you are dead right. But we are moving from man caves to fortresses. Sad reflection on society. Cut off their goolies I say....
