New Bike - Corrosion Test

Perfect glad you was able to follow that thread.............:beerjug:

I think a yearly deep clean day (Spring Clean) is a good thing for a bike, sets you up nicely for Summer as well.

A proper 'deep clean' set up you have going there.

Re never riding in salt...the road outside my house still has plenty of salt down between the tarmac. No issue when it is dry but when it is is damp or wet, the bike gets saline water all over it. Heavy rain once or twice in the next couple of weeks will probably get rid of the vast majority of it so that leaves me with June - Sept as riding season....so I don't let salt put me off and just ride

New to BMW

Hi, All very interesting, I have just sold my 2009 Vstrom 650 and ordered a R1200gsa brand new , a bit dubious about the height as im only 5'9" and its not the low sus, anyway i will on the info of the many posts on here apply ACF 30 immediately and wash with a bucket and warm water only, Probably wont use it during winter. I will keep an eye on things but to be honest ill be paying more attention on the top of the forks.

Different topic but new bikes forks are fine, as for height put your seat on low setting and ESA on MIN and you will be fine, or get a low seat on your bike as standard.

Good advice

Thanks and yes i meant ACF50. Dont know where ACF30 came from :blast

** Update **

For those that still may be interested :D

My bike is now two years old (March 2019) and 14000 miles done, can't believe how fast the time has gone by, so as I'm now thinking of my yearly deep clean with photos, I thought I'd update this thread.

In October last year, depressingly I found rust on my bike, it was rusting from the inside out... !!

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showth...e-Inside-Out-Pics?highlight=shaft+drive+rusty

However, BMW Stepped in and provided a brand new shaft drive and final drive under warranty. So that's been sorted.

Other than that mini-horror story, no more rust anywhere on the bike. Wanted to note that the Fender Extender on the front wheel mudguard does it's job very well.

So... moving forwards into 2019 I've decided to keep this bike and NOT upgrade to the new R1250.

Instead I decided to strip my bike down again and upgrade some of the parts.

I've powdercoated a lot of the bars and metalwork Satin Black.

I've added GS Alloy Wheels to the bike for easy Winter Cleaning. Spokes may go back on in Summer time.

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showth...with-GS-Alloy-Wheels-Pics?highlight=gs+alloys

I've added Hill Start Assist, which I really like and use it on every rideout. Very handy at long-wait traffic lights.

I've bought some Ohlins TTX suspension and had the springs custom painted black, and then decommissioning the Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) with blanking plugs. The old fully working ESA dampers will be stored as spares. These will be fitted in the next 2-3 weeks.

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showth...rade-to-Ohlins-or-Wlbers-ESA?highlight=ohlins

I'm also in the process of deciding which new adjustable steering damper to buy.

I've bought the BMW Tools to DIY adjust and set the valve clearances and Cam Timing, so that'll be done very soon as well.

http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/489591-Top-Dead-Centre-Tool-2017-R1200GS-Adventure

All set up nicely for 2019 :thumby:

(When the R1250 GSA Triple Black is released, I may jump then to the new engine model but not this year)

Ok, so we are now 2.5 years into ownership and just done it's 18000 mile service.

Went out today for a blast and just washed the bike, so I thought I'd take some inspection pictures.

Absolutely NO RUST or CORROSION so far... :thumb:thumb2

So I must be doing something right :beerjug:

Looking bloody amazing. Just goes to show what tlc and commitment can achieve.

If I had 2 working arms I'd post up comparison pics of my bike (same age, 1/3 of your bike's mileage) which was abused and uncared for by its previous owner. But I haven't, so I won't :p

Thanks. Cleaning it with the right products helps as well.

Have subscribed to this thread. I’m still waiting for delivery of my 2017 GS (Only going to be 5 days later than promised, but trying to remain understanding......), my first, after many years of Japanese, Italian and English brands in the garage. I’ve been detailing to a reasonably high amateur level for several years, so will be taking very good care, safe washing, warm air drying, paint sealant and ACF50’ing. Will be riding all year round, but ideally only winter miles when wet.

Yeah, but your bike is like triggers broom, so nothings had a chance to rust yet! :p

Riding around in the rain and mud isn't the problem. I do it all the time.

What kills these bikes ultra quick is SALT.

Don't ride it when theres Salt on the roads. If you absolutely have to, use ACF50.

The next worse thing is Garage Forecourt caustic acid foam jet washers. Don't use the foam cycle.

I must say Warlord the condition of your bike is a credit to you, good work fella.
