I am looking for a set of maps for the US West Coast. Basically LA county, Riverside County, Orange county as far East as Lake Mead and as far north as Mammoth Lakes. Has to be more detail than the Rand McNally Atlas. Anyone got any recommendations?

I use Reisse Maps for planning all my trips and find them excellent. Very detailed and hard wearing as theye are continually being folded and put in the map pocket of my tank bag when over there. AAA maps are pretty good as well and you will be able to find what you need on either of them.

They are available easily enough on line but I'm lucky enough to have this fantastic map shop on my doorstep and they do http://www.themapshop.co.uk mail order. For map nerds like me it's a porn shop :D

If you want more details, you are better off waiting until you get there and buying at any gas station as most of them have good one available for just a few dollars.:thumb

Hi

If you have a Garmin, the lower 49 states are only £34.99 to download.

I'm off on saturday, BA allowing, to do R66 from Chicago to LA, and decided it wasn't worth pissing about for such a proportionately small cost.

agreed and that would be the best but the GPS units they have at Eagle Riders are not ZUMO conform so this would not work. I also have the lower 49 states already.

Yep, Garmin mapping is cheap but you need maps to see what's around you and what's coming up. I plan all my trips using papermaps, have them in my map pocket on the tank bag then use the garmin as back up and for time, distance, altitude and finding that motel once you get to town. Even though I've done most of my US tours a few times and can ride from memory, I still love to look at and follow the maps as I generally always pick up something new like a stop off or great windy road I may have missed on a previous trip.

Sat navs are superb things but don't miss out on the overall picture even if you just buy a map locally, look at it over a beer and then put it in your bag.
