......:(

Hey Ho well at least I've got a diagnosis and it wasn't some bar steward peeing in my float bowls.

So I gave the GS 80 Kalahari a full service yesterday, and then this morning went for a ten miler pre early MOT, its always tricky trying to evaluate exhaust smoke trying to cock your head when riding.

Anyway as luck would have it my Honda mechanic /mot chap was behind me for the last couple of miles to his work place, he asked if I'd dropped a two stroke motor in it.

It's deffo burning oil , especially when up to temperature, what I thought was white/ greyish smoke he confirm was oil smoke, it happens at tick over and under power. I know I'm going to have to strip it or take it somewhere, I'm just wondering ( to confirm really ) if this sounds like rings / bore issues rather than valves / guides ? Could be both I know. The bike runs and pulls lovely , its just smokin...:blast

Any thoughts ? I'll start the strip down next month probably or try and get an estimate of a specialist it the symptoms allow for a fairly accurate diagnosis.

You haven't had it long, have you

Did it do it when you rode it home?

You could do a compression test, dry then wet. If it gets better wet then I'd look at rings.

Yep I'll do that, dry then a bit of oil in the cylinder to see if it improves any low compression is what I assume you refer to as " wet " I seem to remember when I put it away last autumn one of the plugs was wet / black ( oil ? ) . I'll check them again when the engine is cold.

Regardless I'll be doing both sides even if one side is ok.

Probably rings/bores. Never mind, not the end of the world. Seibenrock 1000cc upgrade perhaps?.......:D

 ...they should remain R80 .....possibly devaluing investment if upgrading the motor :rob

Oh and just read your other thread ( there are THAT many :D ) re yellow fuel.....fuel IS yellow ! :comfort

.... and best to take your bike to someone like Mikeboy or Adventure Bike Warehouse for them to do a proper diagnosis/repair :thumb2

Or find out the problem yourself, then fix it yourself, it would more rewarding :thumb2 it's old and a simple bike to work on

cough.... we are talking Captain Black here :D

How very dare you ...

I'm nothing short of a mechanical genius, I was light years ahead of my mates in 1969 on the meccano apprenticeship . :D

The good news is my pal runs his own Porsche specialists workshop, his speciality is the old aircooled stuff so if I can squeeze my bike in a corner at least I'll be semi supervised. ;)

He also uses a reputable head specialist around the corner for cylinder head work so should speed up any further issues. At least my pal will cast an expert eye on pistons and bores etc.

I stripped my 911 turbo motor a few years ago, but wasn't allowed to touch it during the rebuild.

I like the idea of a bit of a learning curve / satisfaction of fixing it myself.

Noooooo !! I've got a PD100. :D

I want it factory ;)

Reminds me when I was a head down arse up merchant , I test rode the Ducati 916 ( 1998 ) or was it a 996 ? Can't remember. Anyway I much preferred the 748 so I bought that, the motor eay much sweeter , reved up nicer etc , its still tucked up in my garage with 15 k on it...:blast

Blimey 20 years ago next year, where did that go..

I agree Dennis, I reckon I could pull top end stuff off with careful application and thought. :D

What could possibly go wrong ?? :nenau

Well it was yellow pee like first thing in the morning , then it cleared into mid afternoon pee colour after drinking water etc.

So why was one side pee coloured and the other much cleaner / transparent ? Then the pee coloured side was the same nice and clear and fresh. :D

Captain, was it smoking prior to you giving it a full service?

Yes, I noticed it on my last run out late last summer , I'd jet washed it and thought maybe I'd got water in the exhaust even though I'm careful doing it. It seemed like white smoke so I'd hoped it was water but alas my MOT guy who was behind me this morning confirmed it was oil smoke under power and at tick over.

If one plug is wet / oily as I though it was last year when I check them I'll strip that side first but will do both sides for repair balance, could just be a broken oil ring, but I don't know until its apart.

Good learning curve if nothing else. When I stripped my 1989 porsche turbo my mate educated me showing me the cylinder bores that still had the honing marks from new so I kinda know what I'm looking for on tat score I think. I can take the barrels and heads to my mates workshop to inspect , and I can photo the pistons if I end up stripping it at home. I'm not sure what confirms piston condition , score marks and measure with micrometer I assume.

I'm willing to learn so hey ho I'll give it a go. :D
