How to: head race bearings help

In over 40 years of fu... fixing my own stuff i've managed to avoid doing head race bearings. :augie
No way to avoid it now.
So i'd appreciate a little help.
I get the general idea - forks off, probably handlebars and loosen the fairing at least to get at what i need to (yes?).
But then, (see pic) to get at the bearings which i presume can be punched out from above / below - bit like removing a wheel bearing (yes?).
What order do i strip / rebuild and what function do these nuts have?

3 ~ Adjusts how tight the bearings are. Do this first.
1 ~ Places/holds the top yoke on top of 3. Do this second.
2 ~ Locks the yoke in position. Do this last.

Yes, head bearings are like doing wheel bearings but often harder as there can be less 'purchase' for your drift (screwdriver ;) ) to rest upon. The odd bit of swearing can sometimes ensue......worse case was having to weld a small bit of bar onto one race in order to have something to grip upon.
I've never actually done a Guzzi so not sure how easy or not they are to do?

...er, this is i presume the order of REassembly?

Weird thing is there is absolutely no 'notchyness' - just forward and backward play if you hold the forks and push/pull. :confused:
Oh - mileage is 75k (i'm doing well!)
 
A dremel or similar might be one of your new friends when it comes to removing the lower race from the steering stem but don't be tempted to cut corners by not removing it. I'd also suggest doing the work when your wife is out of the house so you can put the new outer races in the freezer and the inner races in the oven and make life a lot easier when it comes to actually fitting them.

Defo doing well at 75k.

Are you sure it's the head bearings? Unlikely but maybe play in the forks?

It'll be a while :rolleyes:, but i'll report back on what i find.
 
I had another look. As i don't even possess a 33mm spanner :rolleyes: - i dropped into my local Guru (St. Robbie, of "Mototechnic", Kimmage, D.6w :bow ).
He sorted it in ten minutes; loose headraces / slight play in forks / not enough to worry about.
So even after 75k miles, there's still life in them :eek:
