Ex-lurker, now coming out

I've lurked on here for a while, after getting an S1000XR last September. I'm trading it in for a GS1200 TE, 2017 LC version - collecting it next week. I'll be after some advice about fitting crash protection bars. Do they 'protect'? Which versions should I look at? I've heard that some riders say they make things worse, causing the bike to dig in and flip... Opinions?

Can't offer any advice as to the 'best' protection bars...mine has the standard ones but I only use mine on the road.....
