Im after a pair of city type narrow panniers rather the std boxes by BMW .What do you recommend? Ive got a 1200 gsa 2012 with the factory racks already fitted, but round here filtering is a must. The m25 is hell most days,so what do you know?my 1150 comes in at 860mm so id like it near to that. cheers Pauly.

I've seen you can fit a top box to the pillion seat. That way you could have two top boxes and negate the side panniers and then filter like mad

I use a Givi Trekker top box. Much more useful than the BMW/Touratech alloy top box. It carries all I need for a daily commute. The OEM top box extension is replaced by an alloy plate with Givi attachment lugs so it's its four screws to refit the OEM top box bracket.

The handlebars are wider then the OEM side cases, so if you are going straight they don't get in the way. Bike mirrors against van mirrors are the biggest issue.

If you are swapping lanes in traffic jams TBH you have the wrong bike.

The bike has the givi top box which takes two helmets, the single alloy one was way too small for anything useful, except two or three sarnies.Youd be amazed what i can get away with using the 1150 with its city boxes.i was just trying to see what other options there was that was as narrow as 860mm. out of interest how wide is it with the oem boxes fitted, anybody know?

Givi, cheap and ugly but work very well and swallows a fair amount of stuff.

In case anyone else is thinking about it, you can't fit two top boxes with the BMW adapter kit.
Not enough width for the lower box due to the brackets for the upper one.
It's a good mod if you don't need the rear seat though.

cheers for that!

Not bad..

Watch out for Givi racks. They seem to be designed to stick out from the bike way more than necessary to clear the bodywork. I like their boxes but would have a bespoke rack made. You can buy the mounting blocks and "mushrooms" separately to make your own case mounts.

I use Vario panniers (and top box when needed) on my 2011 GSA, swapped them through this forum for the Aluminium set, I commute in and out of west/n.west London filtering for the last 20 minutes of the journey and not had a problem. The Vario's don't hold as much as the Alu set but they're no wider than the bars and on days where I need to take more 'stuff' I use the top box.

The Vario cases come in at 830mm (total width across the bike).

Cut two inches out of the middle :D

If you get a 100mm wide (oval maybe) exhaust can and mount it parallel to the wheel, you can fit a full size case. Check the space to case back face and tyre edge you'll see what I mean. The exhaust would need a custom link pipe and a curved outlet to avoid cooking the number plate, but you would then have space for two reasonably wide cases.

With this lot you could make your own cases.

Google flight case components comes up with loads on alibaba maybe worth a punt if priced ok.

Exactly ! Varios are utterly brilliant for filtering. Then when you stop, expand them to take a full face lid.
What more do you need?

I use a Givi 46L Topbox and a Kriega US-20 on the rear seat for filtering duties. I haven't had any problems filtering with the Varios when necessary but there's always a concern I'll catch something the front edge. The Varios unexpanded are narrower than the bars. The biggest problem is van/SUV mirrors and I confess to having nudged a few.

hahaha been there done that

I think im sorted now, ive secured a set of Al Jesses. All being well! they look quite narrow too.time will tell.

For London traffic conditions, a top box and tank bag beats a set of panniers every time, no matter how narrow they are.... :)

,

For London Traffic strap a Brompton pushy to the motorbike. Park it at the outskirts and pedal the last bit.

Well ive got the jesses, but they are missing an exhaust lowering kit, so cant fit them.so short term looking out for some std un modded alloy boxes to fit the gsa rails. They seem to go for around 285 a set on the bay in nice nick.so keeping em peeled as they say.
