I'm not sure if this is the right section but help please. I've found a 1980 bike brought over to the UK in 2013 but never UK registered.
There doesn't seem to be any real paperwork as they guy (I know him personally) thinks he's misplaced it. Where do I start?
Any advice or who I might contact for help.
Cheers

Get in touch with DVLA and ask for a Used vehicle import pack
https://www.gov.uk/importing-vehicles-into-the-uk/registering-an-imported-vehicle

You'll need to MOT, Tax and Insure it first - you can do all these on the VIN.
Doubt there will be a certificate of conformity for the vehicle of that age - so it actually gets easier.
Fill in what you can on the form.
They'll probably send an assessor to give it a once over.
You should get a V5 shortly thereafter.
I found the process pretty painless.

As its come from the EU its not really been imported, just moved, so no duty to pay but believe you still have to tell HMRC - the DVLA website explains it all.

Good article here...

You don't need to be insured to register an import if you live in mainland UK.
Read the regs.
Naturally you'd need to be insured to tax it though.

You don't need a CoC if you can prove its over 10 years old.

Great info thanks. I now have a clue what I'm doing.

Brother brought an Aprilia Pegaso 650 over from Italy. Speedo already had MPH marks, so all he needed was a left dipping headlight.

MCE were very helpful insuring on the VIN for me. The maximum they can do it for was 28 days but were happy to redo it every 28 days for a small fee until the process was complete. It took me nearly 3 months due to speedo problems. Good luck.

That article really helped me.......if you send clear photos of the bike, and the frame and engine numbers, it makes it less likely that you will be asked to get the bike inspected, a formal letter to go with the application might help as well, just make it easy for them to pass the bike. Took me 3 weeks, just find an MOT man who doesn’t care about a KPH speedo!

KPH speedo isn't an MOT fail, but you can't get a UK registration without the main speedo being MPH, so you can't fit an auxiliary one while the main one reads kph. A covering note from an authorised dealer stating that the bike complies with UK regs will also help. Bahnstormer wrote on for me.

Here in N Ireland they are VERY strict!

You may have an MPH only speedo if the vehicle is 1986 or older

Post 1986 it must have dual marking and be illuminated (Stickers no longer permissable) and not a removable component (Demountable GPS or Bike PushBike Speedo)! CNUTS! :roba bit of common sense would go a long way!

I do remember an issue at local dealers having to get letters from Ducatti about their speedos conforming to type approval, with them only being MPH
