When did the R1200GS become Euro-3 Compliant?

The ULEZ standards are:
•Euro 3 for motorcycles, mopeds, motorised tricycles and quadricycles (L category)
•Euro 4 for petrol cars, vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles
•Euro 6 for diesel cars, vans and minibuses and other specialist vehicles
•Euro VI for lorries, buses and coaches and other specialist heavy vehicles

They will exempt the vehicle if it isn’t Euro 3 but the manufacturer states that Nox emmissions are below the TFL limit.

So unsurprisingly the eccoc@bmw.co.uk desk are dealing with a high volume of emails...

Long shot but I'll ask the question. I bought my 2003 GS1150 in Dubai, it was originally for the Argentine market. The note from BMW UK specifically says they only give COC on UK/EU market bikes. On registering the bike in the UK back in 2005 I had to take it to the vehicle inspectorate and still have the report which states CO % VOL 0.07 and HC ppm VOL 42 - the CO figure is not the same as the NOX test users refer to is it? If not I guess it's BMW Argentina which could be fun.....

I've finally had a response, but just to ask for a scan of the registration document. Might be worth anyone starting this process to send that off at the outset.

Dear Sir/Madam,
We apologise for the delay in getting back to you, we are currently experiencing a high volume of enquiries.
Please can you email a scanned copy of the full current registration document, once this has been received we will be able to advise further.
Kind regards,
The Homologation Team

Just for the record - I emailed BMW two days ago with a scan of my V5C, and got a letter through in post this morning with the necessary NOx emissions data. Whole thing took less than 48hrs and cost nothing. Well done BMW.

Can you share the exact wording of your email?

With the forthcoming introduction of ULEZ in London, I am looking for the emissions data for my 2002 BMW R1150GS - specifically the NOx emissions.

The bike details are:
2002 BMW R1150GS
Type approval #: ∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎
VIN: ∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎
Engine #: ∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎∎

I attach a scan of the V5c document.

Thanks - and did TFL exempt your bike based on what you received back?

All done - got the exemption through today:

Hello
I appreciate this is an old thread but with the ULEZ extension I am now also affected and my BMW GS from 2007 is not exempt.
Could you please share (if you remember) who/which email address you contacted at BMW to obtain the NOx data?
Thanks

From memory I emailed BMW Motorrad UK's head office... can't find or remember the address but I'm sure you can find it with a little googling

It does seems the database has been updated so those with bikes built before 2006 better check again....

I have a 2004 1200GS which "should" be EURO3 but trying to prove this is a bit frustrating. Contacted BMW directly and got the following response:

Good morning Alex

Thanks for your further email.

I’ve looked on the system and I’m afraid it doesn’t say the emission standard of your bike.

But we do have our fully trained technicians at our Approved Centres, who would be in the best position to address any technical queries – you can find your nearest Centre here.

I hope this helps, if there’s anything else I can do to help, please let me know.

Kind regards

Nathaniel

Dear Alex Mack

Thank you for your enquiry received on 26 October 2018, regarding Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
There are a number of factors which need to be considered for example; Euro standard, vehicle type, fuel type and
Nitrogen Oxides (NOx and/or Particulate Matter (PM) values.
Between now and 8 April 2019, when the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is introduced, we are gathering additional
vehicle compliance data and refreshing our database.
If you can provide us with a copy of your vehicle registration document (V5C) that contains the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)
value and Particulate matter (PM) value (if diesel), we can confirm the compliance status of your vehicle. Please check
that the NOx and if applicable the PM value is recorded on the V5c, usually these are detailed in sections V.3 and V.5
respectively.
If these values are not recorded on the V5c you will need to provide a copy of the vehicle's Conformity Certificate which
you can obtain from the vehicle manufacturer. Alternatively you may wish to contact the vehicle manufacturer's
homologation department. They will need to provide you with a letter signed by a named individual from the
homologation department which contains the following information:
- vehicle registration mark (VRM)
- vehicle identification number (VIN)
- euro standard the vehicle was manufactured to
- Fuel Type
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) value
and
- Particulate matter (PM) value (if diesel).
You can complete an online enquiry form and upload your proof at tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone.
If you have any questions, please visit tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone or call us on 0343 222 2222
(textphone 0207 649 9123 if you have impaired hearing).
Yours sincerely

Has anyone got hold of the details that TFL require otherwise I will persue the issue?

Thanks

Alex
Just got a ULEZ penalty notice for my 2004 1200gs, for which I already have a certificate of conformity from BMW, confirming the NOX as 0.038, which is much lower than the 0.08 required by ULEZ. It seems that TFL has got the 1200gs as a non compliant vehicle, so you need to have a certificate of conformity, as if you get a PCN, you can respond with a copy of the V5 and a certificate of conformity and they should drop the charge. At least that's what I have done, fingers crossed !
