Has been the most unreliable POS I have ever owned in 40 years of continuous riding.
So I'm here in a last ditch attempt to throw some light on my problems in the hope I can continue to ride this great bike.
Yeah it's great when it's working, but the trouble is most of the time it doesn't.
I've spent so much money on it now that I've gone past the point of return with it.
At the moment it's over in Germany waiting to be repatriated after a catastrophic breakdown in the black forest.
I ended up having to complete my trip in a friggin car.

Welcome to the site Paul

By the title I expected you to own a WC not an 1100

No you haven't. What you've spent so far is what's known as "sunk costs" and these should not be allowed to influence your future decisions. It's sad to have had to spend a fortune so far but, if you don't love the bike and/or can't afford to keep spending money on it, cut your losses and move on.

Welcome to the forum though! :D

Change the title to "... hate my 1100GS" and you may get more appropriate inputs from folks who specialise in it (else everyone will assume it is to do with the LC as pass on :D )

Welcome to the site. :thumb2

It's well known that BMW production rocketed in 2004 following a certain TV series featuring McGregor and Boorman.
BMW admit they couldn't cope with the ensuing levels of production so something had to give. Quality control.

Your bike was manufactured before this and generally has a superior build quality. You've been unlucky.

Windup merchant....
Comes on ere slating the iconic 1100
Doesn't say what chain of breakdowns he's endured so far.
for all the bluster, it may just be a loose wire.:D

I wish.
It's been a catalogue of mostly electrical problems, but at the moment it's in Germany with a knackered R/H cylinder.
Zero compression, and spark plug completely obliterated.
Mechanic in Germany said the exhaust valves are both chipped away at the edges.
So it over heated on that side.
Honestly, I have never known anything like this.

Which type of exhaust is the bike running?

Does it have a Remus/Van de Linden?

Standard exhaust.
I think I'll get rid and get a decent bike.
Got my eye on the Honda cross tourer.
May lack the style and character of the BMW, but at least I'll be able to set off knowing I'll get there.

Just before you do this, may I suggest that you contact Steptoe.

https://www.gsshop.biz/

You're in Surrey, he is only just up the road, give him a call (miserable c***) and ask him (nicely) to have a look at it

why dont you look up engineer on this forum. he will restore your faith in bmw. maybe he will convince you to carry on suck/stroking bmw reputation.

most unreliable POS or great bike ..... make your mind up, it can't be both.
