Interested to have it confirmed that KTM have changed from the plastic unit to the more solid SW Mochech version.

No I don’t yet. I would like it confirmed, as it would be a waste of money buying if it doesn’t fit.
That's the one I have fitted on my 2016 SA-T- it's very good, but I doubt it will fit on the 1290's with the new style of instrument panel. Hope I'm wrong though.
that will fit the older style dash but not with the tft screen like on the 1290s
