Are you able to pass a motorcycle test on an automatic scooter ?
Mate of mine has a 125 scooter.
Wants a more powerful one & has no desire to ride a normal bike with clutch & gears.
Can he take the test on his scooter & get a full bike license ?
He's over 25 with a full car license.

Yes he can, the biggest problem with an auto scooter is getting it up to speed to trigger the speed trap at the required pace for the emergency stop and avoidance maneouvre in the MOD1 test. I recommend that he goes to a school as most of them gain access to MOD1 test centres at weekend to train students on the specific elements of the test. The pass rates for just booking a test and rocking up without proper training are sub 20%.

The Yamaha Tmax XP500/530 and Suzuki Burgman AN400 are a "twist and go" but due to having more power than smaller scooters are categorised as an A2 and can be ridden at age 19 onwards.

I'm pretty confident that any maxi scooter can accelerate more than quickly enough to hit a 30mph speed trap at a test centre unlike a smaller 125cc scooter.

You can pick up a tidy Bugman AN400 or early model XP500 for £1500 upwards, be aware though that the larger Burgman 650 is category A (full bike sized) with a restriction of age 24 onwards. Any of these would be a good choice and other maxi scooters are available from Piaggio, BMW etc.

When i did my mod 1 last year on a 600cc Bandit --

60 Kmh (37.28) on the emergency stop

55 Kmh (34.17) On the avoidance

That was using 2nd gear and nailing it out of the top turn, shutting off just as i passed through the speed

gate

I think a maxi would have to start accelerating a lot sooner, with the risk of too much speed in the avoidance...

Mind you the examiner will tell you if they think your too fast ;)

My maxi will keep up with your 600 Bandit, don't worry. ;)

Correct - a maxi scooter will have easily enough power. The problem is that he will be lucky to find a school that has such a machine to do his test on so that means his options are:

Buy a maxi scooter for his test - but he is not allowed to ride it on the road as his CBT limits him to a 125. He is only allowed to ride it under the radio supervision of a qualified instructor - therefore he needs to find a local school who will send an instructor to his house to collect him to give him training and to also escort him to test. This is something we have done on a number of occasions where students have, for whatever reason, needed to use their own bike for training and test.
