Hi all planning 2 weeks on the north island 13th Feb onwards would appreciate advice on places to stay, events etc.
Day 1 arrive Auckland pick up camper then on to Orewa beach for 2 days. then north to Pahia.
After that meander down Wellington way.
Our only requirements are pub, restaurant and a few shops/attractions.
I know 2 weeks is not a lot of time to see much, but will do our best to meet the folks and see some nice places.
cheers Ian.
ps a nearby pie shop would be nice:)

Just back from NZ two weeks ago.
Musts are Bay of Islands and Coramandel peninsular, fabulous places

The Art Deco Festival weekend in Napier 14th - 18th Feb. is well worth going to. Great fun event. You’ll do well to book accommodation in advance though as the whole town gets busy. We went last year and were lucky to find somewhere by just turning up. Everyone dresses up in period garb etc.

The town is well worth seeing anyway for the Deco buildings (if you like Art Deco that is.)

Te Papa Museum, Wellington
They have an exhibition on, the like of which I’ve not experienced before. It’s about Gallipoli and the exhibits are blew us away. I have pics before but really don’t want to spoil the “Wow” as you walk in.

:beerjug:

Te Papa also has one of these on display too

Should be a good time to travel

Kia ora ra korua,

Well, where does one start with a question like this. Advice is really dependent on what spins your wheel.
Unless you know someone there, Orewa is a suburb of Auckland - an hour or so further north will give you better options to relax and get into the holiday mode eg Omaha etc
But if you are in a campervan you can't go too wrong with a route down the east coast.
Coromandel is recommended with Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach worth a visit. Do your research on drive times as what looks like a short distance could have your average speed down ie great biking roads.
A great two days is route 35 from Whakatane to Gisborne if you like getting away from it all. A trip to the East Cape lighthouse is even more remote for those who want to be one of the first in the world to see the light of a new day.
There are a few great day walks around the Te Urewera or if you head inland there is the Tongariro walk.
There are also a number of bike (push) trails where you can spend a relaxing day riding on a path away from traffic. A fine example, which I have just done, is the bike trail from Waihi through the Karangahake Gorge to Paeroa and back (easy 1 day). There are plenty of businesses set up to cater for the tourists with bike hire, transport etc.
If you enjoy good food and wine then Martinborough is worth parking up for a couple of days.

Two weeks is good for the North - you wont see everything but the most important thing is to take your time, relax and enjoy !!

If you're driving a camper, you won't have much option in high season... :D
