There is a petition being set up with regard to the situation of one of the brave lads who stormed the Iranian embassy
He is homeless and Hereford council dont seem to be at all interested.
Have a look and tell me I am wrong to sign and be "offended" by what seems to be happening.

I dont agree to post up the other chaps pictures, but if I didnt somone would deem me bias

Seems a little odd that the British Legion, or one of the myriad military focussed charities aren't getting involved?

The situation of this chap and his former forces colleagues is shit, but a petition to improve the circumstances of one of the 13000 (Telegraph stats) homeless veterans is less useful than pissing in the wind.
As much as it is easy to rail against the Local Authority, if they don't have the accommodation, what do they do?

Looking at his situation pragmatically, he didn't appear to leave the army and become homeless due to PTSD etc directly as a result of his experiences in the army. He appears to have fallen on bad times after his business collapsed. If he was part of the Iranian Embassy siege, he has been out of the army a good 20+ years, so in terms of his qualifying for housing, he is an elderly (presumably) single male with health issues...which puts him right up there with a shed load of other people in similar circumstances.

I think people should get angry that people are unable to find anywhere to live. Young people, old people, fit, ill, whatever their circumstances. Housing is a right and has become an investment opportunity for those with the money.

Petitions are not the way to solve it, however. The ballot box is the only really effective way, short of violent revolution, and we have a few years before we get to that point, I think.

They tend to have pretty strict criteria for who they help. I guess his time out of the army might be one of the factors preventing assistance...although that is a guess.

If the story is true, as the facts portray.................then it stinks

Soldier - no home
Terrorist - living rent free

Cannot be right, if so............ this country is bolloxed

If people continue to vote for a party which sells off the family silverware, they have no complaints when there are no remaining resources to support people who need them.

Re: the Terrorist. He served his time in prison and has been rehabilitated according to our criminal justice system. The "living rent free" comment probably implies that he is living in accommodation (in another Local Authority area) and is in receipt of benefits...it doesn't sound as sexed up when you say it like that.

From the Telegraph article:

A spokesman for Herefordshire Council said: "Herefordshire Council can confirm that it is actively working with this individual to secure accommodation within the county.

"Unfortunately, to date the individual has not provided all the documentation needed to legally register for housing."

"However, regardless of this, the council’s housing team has found and offered two different forms of accommodation, in areas which were agreeable to the individual, but which have subsequently been turned down.

Maybe if he spent less time on television and instead filled the fucking forms in, he might be in a better situation.

Whilst I feel very sorry for Bob and the circumstances he finds himself in coupled with my dismay that so many ex forces bods are homeless there is more to this than the media are saying.
As mentioned his business collapsed and he has been housed and had work but it seems that he walked away from them for whatever reason.

Homelessness for anyone, regardless of reasons, is a tragedy that needs sorting out across the board, not just for ex forces although i feel they should get a level of priority

The now very wealthy Mr McNab has thrown in his views but not his money it seems.

Hi

I think you have not actually read the full story see here;

Surely it is not being suggest that because a guy servered in the armed forces nearly forty years ago and more recently his business failed he should be treated differently to others. All people without somewhere to live need help. These articles re SAS are just headlines aimed at selling their newspapers.

So this guy has not (so it is claimed) supplied the currect paperwork and has turned down two offers of accommodation so far. Am I being unreasonable to say if true "get real"

Derek
