Grindelwald Switzerland

Stayed there for a few days five years ago and even lucky enough to get some good weather! Well worth the stop, I stayed at camping Eigernordwald and it was amazing to open the tent in the morning to that view. If you have the cash to spare the Jungfraubahn is well worth the money (on a clear day).

Another nod for the Hotel staubbach... Stayed there twice..
And would again..

Alpenblick Grindelwald, cheap by the local standards, stunning views.

Dave

Stayed there as well, cracking patio overlooking the mountains.
And as you stated cheap...

On the other side from Grindewald is the Shilthorn which has the revolving restaurant Piz Gloria and featured in 007 On her Majesty’s Secret Service. The 007 buffet breakfast was very good and a display room about the filming there.

The Jungfrau railway is a bucket list experience, however it is prone to the weather (low cloud = poor visibility). You get to look out of the north face of the Eiger and go to the top at 3,500m.

Oh - its not cheap CHF 190!

A cheaper alternative is the Grindelwald First lift. You get cliff top walks and then can descend by go cart and scooter.

We did the Jungfraujoch railway in the late 80's , apparently the most perfect day they had for over 20 years with views of 4 countries from the Sphinx Observatory, perfect cloudless blue skies, bright sunshine and recent fresh snow .................... my Pentax SLR chose that perticular moment to go tits up.

Back then it cost £30 inc the trains from Interlaken, every time we went back to the area in the following years the top was always shrouded in cloud and it wasn't worth going up to the top, instead we just went up to the Kleine Scheidegg on the train and hiked back down to Grindlewald

Thanks for the suggestions guys, however ive found it difficult to find a decent hotel near the Grindelwald at a decent price, apart from hostels, which the wife wont entertain. I guess that's Switzerland in July. I got a good deal at the Hotel Alphorn in Interlaken, however, which isn't too far from the Jungfrau etc. I shall report back afterwards, but its got some good reviews and has offroad parking.

We did the Jungfrau railway, the last few kilometres are inside the mountain and the tunnel walls have screens synched with the speed of the train so the train window frame effectively becomes a TV. Clever stuff.
The station at the top has 5 levels, ice tunnels, skiing, restaurants, shops but the best bit is the observatory on the top, breathtaking.

Truly a bucket list experience.

Personal preference is Lauterbrunnen. Same road out of Interlaken and instead of turning left to Grindelwald go straight on to a flat bottomed valley with thousand foot cliffs either side. Lauterbrunnen sits in the valley floor overlooked by Wengen, for anyone who follows the downhill skiing. Can't help with accommodation, I always camp, Camping Jungfrau has great facilities and a fabulous location almost under the Staubbach falls and in summer you can watch the base jumpers parachuting from the cliffs.
If the railway to the top of the Jungfraujoch, as recommended by others, is on your list then the first train of the day, at about half 6 in the morning, always used to be half price.

The train is improved if you can persuade them to let you out at the window onto the North Face then you can pop your head out and go “faaaaark!”

It's a normal stop so no persuading required, other than getting somebody to go with you.

I thought they’d stopped dropping people off there unless they were escorted by an official type person or is that what you meant?

I spent nearly 2 weeks Eiger Watching a few years back in the hope that the North Face would stop dropping avalanches several times a day and in the end we went up by the West Flank which should have been our descent route.

I think I'll visit it this summer; it looks stunning!!!!

Yep - you are correct. New rolling stock introduced late 2016 which no longer stops :(

I thought it was longer ago than that so I’m correct but not because I’m up to date with changes. It used to be well worth the look and we used it to try and get a better view and judge the condition of the face but all that did was make us even more pissed off because it was horrible with stones falling all day. It’s still one of my favourite mountains just to go and look at because from the meadows below it looks 100% vertical as if someone has sliced a chunk off it.

Hotel Bellary

I can recommend this hotel It is only a short walk to the centre of town centre and has parking.
It is family run and I think the rates are reasonable for Grindelwald. The website is http://www.bellary.ch/
All rates are room rates. It has views to the North Face of the Eiger

Many thanks.

If you are not used to altitude do not underestimate the height of the Jungfrau, hop off the train at the Kleine Scheidegg for 30 minutes and have a coffee before continuing to the top
