Crash Bars

So, I’ve checked.

The only parts fitted with the crash bars appear to be those that come with the set – see the link below.

Here are my pics - sorry that they're links, couldn't sort out file upload. Also apols for any orientation issues.

The front flange rear has no spacer

The lower flange front has (what appears to be) an immovable ‘spacer’ (note, from the image it may look as if the flange is bent where it goes on - it's not, it's a picture illusion)

The upper flange front has the removal spacer show as item no 6 (it's the bit with some grubby acf50 on!)

I’ve looked at the rubbers again. As there is a point in which there is no gap between these and the x-heads, so I simply can’t say if the rubbers have been reduced. If they have, the dealer appears to have a good job at concealing!

I think the bottom line is, (additional) spacers have been ruled out but can't rule out whether the rubbers have been modified (without taking off).

Would be interested to know how it goes.

Thanks very much yofi. Really interesting.

My research shows that the X-Heads are compatible with BMW GSA OEM engine bars upto 2017 (GSA lower engine bars and GS engine bars are similar). However there is mention that the engine bars have been upgraded by BMW since 2017 by putting bigger rubber 'spacers' the parts in your photos. MachineArts site state that there may or may not be a conflict between the two parts as their research indicates that each engine bar is 'slightly' different (tolerances when manufactured etc). It goes on to say that there is no problems if the two touch when fitted.

Mine should be here in the next day or two and I will look to fit them straight away. I will let you know how it goes. If I need to 'shave' a bit of the rubber off the engine bar(s) than I will as I want the best of both worlds (engine bars and MachineArt covers).

Thanks again.

Neil

Ha ha! By the looks of it you've even managed to get oyster leather on the gs seat as well!

Gorgeous pad btw.

+1 on the MachineArt Moto X-heads. And they've been tested in anger: do exactly what it says on the tin.

Yes, they save the cylinder heads - not other parts of the bike. That's why people used them in combination, with the x-heads offering additional protection against debris.

Hi Mike not trying to sell you the Wunderlich, but I have the Wunderlich Stainless steel lowers and uppers on my 2017 Exclusive, they fit perfect as they are for the 2017 bike, you must buy the center bar also, just for info, the lowers fit most models, but the upper is specific for 2017 LC.

Whats the story with the centre bar? Looking at getting a set of lower bars.

Collected my new crash bars yesterday on the way home from work and fitted them last night over my MachineArt cylinder head covers.

I used a commn file to remove a few mm off the rubber spacers on the OEM crash bars so they fit snugly but do not exert any pressure on the cylinder head.

Looking at my options before hand. I could have opted to leave off the stainless steel bush (thick washer thing see photo) which is fitted between the frame and the crash bar on the top fitting. This would have made the cars fit with a little clearance on the head covers but it would have fouled the frame where the engine bar starts to curve. I didn’t like that idea so went for shaving off a few mm. The modification is not visible and they look like they grew there. Very happy to have the ‘belt and braces’ option.

Thanks for the update Neil. I'm sure, then, the dealers got the file/dremmel out when mine were fitted! I appreciate that some people don't like crash bars (and non-black ones come to that), but it's never been a problem for me on this sort of bike; and without doubt gives much more protection than x-heads and sliders alone. Good job!
